Zero, on its own, is not a number; it is a numerical mirror.

Zero: The numerical mirror of numbers whereby the positives reflect the negatives. It has no affiliation of its own and thus is a neutral numerical figure.

Numerical mirror: The barrier between positive and negative numbers being literally useless and worthless in and of itself.

Number: a quantity or amount. Either positive or negative.

I believe that zero is only a placeholder. Even in the number 1,000,000 it is not actually a value but rather an empty slot waiting for a number from 1-9 to fill it.

Zero is a number; in fact, it is a real number. It is on the number line right between 1 and -1. You can add, subtract, and multiply with 0 and get real answers. You can divide numbers into zero and get a real answer, zero.

The set of numbers would be in complete without zero; Zero is a requirement for all rings and thereby of course fields and vector spaces so one could argue without zero there would not be a set of real numbers.

Let's say we accept zero as a placeholder on a number such as 1000000, how then do you explain the non importance of 0 in a number such as 1404?

My definition of a number was a quantity or amount either positive or negative.

Zero is a non-quantity, it is a complete absence of any quantity whatsoever yet not a destruction of quantity as is a negative number. It is not an amount of any form or shape and certainly is neither positive nor negative.

In the number 1404 the third digit is not a digit. It is an absence of a valuable digit merely representing the fact that there is a missing place to be filled between 400 and 4. In stead of a blank space on the age which would read '14 4' to make it clearer we write 1404. The circle representing 'zero' is merely an empty digit placeholder.
