Con

First off, a living organism must have at least one cell, need energy, respond to an environment, and reproduce. http://voices.yahoo.com...

1. At least one cell
As my opponent stated viruses have a strand of DNA which makes up it. They are made up of cells as cells are made up of DNA and proteins therefore virus's have at least one cell.

2. Need Energy
Virus take control of a host cell and reproduce this is how it takes in energy. Their metabolism is their host cell.
(wiki.answers.com *sorry couldn't get a hold of the whole source due to this site being blocked at school).

3. Respond to the environment.
Virus respond to the environment by mutations.

4. Reproduce
This I already argued.

Reasons for voting decision: Unacceptable FF, necessarily causing higher scoring in every category for Con. Possible: I am aware that there are educators that require their pupils to participate in debates on this site. I am not certain that these students take the contests here much more seriously than any other homework assignments. I have no reason to suspect that this was the case here - I only mention it as a possible matter of relevant trivia.

Reasons for voting decision: Pro forfeited without making a case. "Opinions differ on whether viruses are a form of life, or organic structures that interact with living organisms. They have been described as "organisms at the edge of life", since they resemble organisms in that they possess genes and evolve by natural selection, and reproduce by creating multiple copies of themselves through self-assembly. Although they have genes, they do not have a cellular structure, which is often seen as the basic unit of life. " - Wikipedia
