i believe it is strange because such type of reading transports the reader into a make belief world and the reader becomes so used to such types of easy sitautions and solutions that it rather becomes so very difficult for him to face his real life situations.the very thougt and realisation that life is not a bed of roses like those of the characters of the book make him disillusioned and frustraed. if at all it does prvovide any relief to the readers from their fast paced lives,i believe its only temporary respite...

First of all, please concede that we are, in fact, arguing from the opposite perspectives you state. From your opening statement it appears you are arguing "in favor" of the statement "adults reading harry potter is strange" while I am arguing against it, i.e., that adults reading Harry Potter is not strange.

My rebuttal of your first point:

To argue that reading fantasy stops the reader being able to deal with real life situations is, frankly, ridiculous. Please provide evidence if you have any. By this argument, all fiction would have the power to numb people's perceptions of the ‘real world', which would be terrifying. I would argue to the contrary; if anything, fiction (even fantasy) heightens our awareness by widening our perspectives on human issues. Furthermore, the fantasy world of Harry Potter is NOT, as you describe, a "bed of roses" full of "easy situations". If you were familiar with the books, you know that Harry has to deal with difficult relationships between peers and adult figures, bullying, self-doubt, identity crisis, betrayal and physical suffering.

My arguments for why adults reading the Harry Potter books is not "strange":

(1) they are complex, interesting stories spread out oven seven volumes; there is something immensely satisfying about absorbing oneself into such a detailed fantasy landscape in which story elements and character development grows over such a large fictional saga
(2) they are enjoyable escapism
(3) they can represent a social / learning activity when adults read them to children

then again, the webmaster did create this website to vote in terms of expressing yourself, but I think he intended that people should comment as well. Quite frankly, the lack of comments is what really makes this disappointing.

Reasons for voting decision: What was funny here is that Pro and Con switched. Con made a terrible case for Pro and in response Pro refuted arguments supporting themselves and built up Con's case. Con was wise to forfeit twice because they could actually get away with this. This therefore doesn't affect conduct.
