Megan, I'm not sure what you are talking about either. The site rules do not prohibit fun. Food topics are perfectly valid; they impinge upon daily life a good deal more than many topics here. In a debate it is fair to exploit the weaknesses of poor debaters. That's how poor debaters learn to improve.

I enjoyed the original "Iron Chef" cooking competition TV show done in Japan. They would have celebrity guest judges like pro baseball players and girl pop singers. One might suppose these young people would know nothing. In fact, they were quite brilliant. In food-conscious Japan it is much more the norm. Knowledge is knowledge.

Thank you Roy for doing your own scientific test on the matter. It is people like you who make a difference in the world, and yes this debate is really important because every man, woman, and child eats bacon, or thinks about bacon because it is just that good. Again, thank you

In order to determine this matter, I performed a carefully controlled tasting using hickory-smokey bacon, Heinz tomato ketchup, and Canadian maple syrup. My expectation was that maple syrup would win, because it generally tastes better than ketchup. However, the tasting clearly favored ketchup.

Ketchup is a sweet-and-sour sauce, while maple syrup is pure sweet. There is a substantial tradition of matching pork products with sweet-and-sour: ham with pineapple and brown sugar, Oriental sweet-and-sour pork, prosciutto with melon. Ketchup and bacon is in that genre, so it shouldn't be a surprise. Personally, I prefer bacon with fruit, like berries -- another sweet-sour thing.

The problem remains as to how one can win a debate on what tastes best solely by arguments, but this time it seems Pro and Con agree it should be determined by what *is* best rather than what is argued best.

At last a debate on something really important!
