castor oyl is a good character, i must admit, but he is vain. in this debate, you are arguing that he is unselfish and has a small ego, while i argue that he is selfish and has a large ego.

not sure who castor oyl is? he's olive oyl's brother from segar's thimble theatre.

i await your opening argument.

Who is castor oyl?

i thought i already made that quite clear. he is the brother of olive oyl from e.c. segar's acclaimed comic strip, thimble theater, and he was the main protagonist, along with Ham gravy, until Popeye came along in 1929.

you might note that when trying to get Popeye a ring match, he calls Popeye a dock rat and a flea brained nincompoop. he cares only for money, and he thinks he's all that. he thinks that Popeye is ugly, and yet he's a midget with a billiard ball nose.

i await your next argument.
The_Legend27

Con

That is not an egotistical thing. He is insulting to get Popeye into the ring.

do you know about thimble theater? you probably do. after all, your profile says you are 100 years old, so you were born in 1916 or 1917. you were a kid when the comic strip came out. you probably read it.

i always assumed you were at least 400 years old. that army you destroy in the commercial looks medieval, so i thought you were older than a hundred years. hell, there's nothing abnormal about being 100. lots of people get to be that age. still, you are the legend 27, so i guess you are a lot cooler.

how about the time popeye and castor are on an island, and castor continually woos fanny foster, even though she says she doesn't love him? or the time that he starts his detective agency-he calls it the most efficient in the world, whereas glim and merlock jones are just as good. or i think so, anyway.

then, of course, he cruelly asks olive to get a dime's worth of longitude so he and ham can slip off on a ship. he won't let women be sailors. i call that sexism.

i think that originally, castor was the control freak, and popeye was the guy who always saw around his plots. take, for instance, when castor tells popeye to do the work of twelve men and popeye says he wants the pay of twelve men. castor says no.

castor has an enormous ego.

i await your next argument.

You didn't even provide an argument.

you think you're gonna win just because you're the legend 27, don't you? well, you may have won those other six debates, but you only won them because your opponent didn't report the votes which said "thelegend27 can't lose."

i warn you, judges, anyone who votes without a valid reason will get reported.

i'd suggest you start posting real arguments, thelegend27.

castor oyl has a huge ego. he demands that everyone do things his way, whether or not they want to. when he gambled at dice island and used the whiffle hen, he makes olive, ham, and popeye toil under the hot african sun, carrying huge bags of cash to the boat, while he has fun inside. not only is his ego huge, he's also pretty darn cruel.

then, of course, he teams up with mister kilph, and when popeye loses every match because he's too good, castor and kilph leave him, and start managing big hunks of cheese like bullet joe and tinearo. i think that as the strip goes on, castor becomes more cruel to popeye, and olive, cole, and nana oyl start excluding him from the family.

he really does think he's the greatest.

I await your next argument. and please, use more than fifty words. i want this to be exciting.
The_Legend27

Con

He may think he's the greatest, but he is STILL not to egotistical. He may be egotistical, but is ego is NOT too large. His large ego is an essential plot device used to develop the story. There is no doubt that you like the comic strip series, considering you are making a debate about it. However, if he WAS too egotistical the plot would've sucked and you would not have liked it. Also, he may be cruel, but you have failed to give evidence on why he is egotistical. Egotistical =/= cruel.

i thought so. you look sort of like a wizard, so i assumed you had been through the middle ages. plus, the army you tipped over had swords and shields and stuff.

i mean, being 100 is cool and everything, but it hardly makes you immortal. a lot of people make it to 100. i figured you were probably born somewhere around the year 1000.

I'm not 100. Faking one's age is a online safety thing.

Reasons for voting decision: Pro argued and listed several examples in Castor Oyl was cruel and egotistical. Con rebutted by saying that he was just trying to get Popeye into the ring, and that those, although cruel, weren't egotistical. Con argued that the plot would've sucked if Castor didn't have that ego, and that the plot would've sucked if he really was egotistical, and that his ego is a plot device. Pro did not rebut this, since it was the final round.
