Thanks to Con for making the debate. I’m going to be arguing for why school’s are responsible for mitigating the effects of cyber bullying.

To start with, bullying is something we should all be trying to stop. The negative effects of bullying are widely known: the victims of bullying face things like depression, anxiety, increased feelings of sadness and lonliness, health issues and decreased academic abilities(1). There’s also a correlation between school shooting and bullying victims: 12 of the 15 school shootings in the 1990’s were performed by victims of bullying(1).

The dangers of cyber bullying are even worse. 50% of kids ages 14-24 have experienced some sort of cyber bullying, and that 76% say that cyber bullying is a serious threat(2). The harms of cyber bullying are much more grave, as well. The things you say on the internet are a permanent thing, meaning that they're there for the victim to read and re-read again, inflicting the same harms over and over again. More people will see things said on the internet than in the school yard, increasing the audience that can observe the bullying which increases the humiliation felt.

As such, it's everyone's responsibility to fight cyber-bullying wherever we can. This includes schools. Since he forfeited last round, I await his arguments.
