If a person has committed a crime and shows no guilt or acknowledgement that they did something wrong then they deserve some sort of punishment which could include going jail but if the crime was vicious they deserve the death penalty. Only when a life is taken do I agree to use the death penalty as a form of punishment.
Actually the people who get the death penalty are those that have committed a vicious crimes and some of those people happen to be poor but it is not because they are poor that they get the death penalty it is because of their actions and the evidence that is presented to prove that they committed that crime.
I will admit there have been cases in which the person convicted and was later announced innocent. That tends to happen after the person is dead but when they are tried the burden of proof is very hard to meet since the life of the person is at stake. The burden of proof is not usually meet but when it is it has to be beyond a reasonable doubt meaning that a jury would have to have no doubts that the person is guilty.
Financial costs to taxpayers of capital punishment is several times that of keeping someone in prison for life. Most people don't realize that carrying out one death sentence costs 2-5 times more than keeping that same criminal in prison for the rest of his life
Even though it costs a lot more to have criminals get the death penalty it cannot be considered wrong means to punish them. Especially when they commit vicious crimes which involve taking the life of another human.
