Competitive eSports (console and PC) are the future of sports.
People are equally, if not more competitive about online gaming as they are about physical sports.
With the growth of the eSports sector there is no reason why it cannot overtake physical sports in participation and media coverage in the future.

Con

eSports are not the future of sports because they will never gain the type of infrastructure that physical sports have. Physical sports have the key advantage of exposure from a young age through gymnastics sessions at school and parents' desire to get kids active and outside. In contrast, eSports will never be utilized in school or promoted by parents because they provide no tangible physical benefits. Also, as it is more fun to play an eSport than watch one, their marketability is limited.

That type of reasoning could be also be put to athletic sports (Football, baseball...).
The appeal of watching someone very talented is applied to all competition events. Poker does not require extraordinary physical ability, yet it received, and still continues to receive, major coverage on ESPN. You know why? Because we've moved out of time where ones physical strength is not the only thing to be publicly admired and watched in competition. The competition of the minds in e-sports has become a great success, even filling the Staples Center for the LCS World Championships just this last year.

A second point: just because something can be achieved by anyone does not make it uninteresting. Poker, again, is a great example. I love watching it because it showcases the mental examination of the game at the highest level by pros who have learned the odds and can expertly read bluffs of their opponents while maintaining there own. This takes extreme concentration and practice. Its also the same with the NFL, NHL, MLS, or any competitive athletic league. Not everyone who plays in any of these leagues has natural talent, or an genetic advantage. Some worked from nothing to get were they are now. The same applies for MLG competitors. Some have naturally amazing reflexes and exceptional strategy and planning, while some worked years at a time to perfect a mouse motion. To say that no one has any natural talent in MLG is an insult. Sorry this was such a long comment.

As a shameless plug-in, if anyone is interested in playing LoL to achieve the dream of Challenger, add me at : AoA of the Fire. I kinda suck, so please pardon that.

Have a nice day.

I don't know about participation, but media coverage of eSports doesn't seem likely. People watch professional sports to see the most talented players in the word compete and test their physical abilities against each other. In theory, anybody could be good at eSports, and this automatically makes it uninteresting for a spectator.
