Definition: Poetry is an imaginative awareness of experience expressed through meaning, sound, and rhythmic language

thus
poetry is in meter ie rhythm

free verse is not in meter/rhythm

Let me define what Free Verse is
according to Wikipedia," Free verse is an open form (see Poetry analysis) of poetry. It does not use consistent meter patterns, rhyme, or any other musical pattern. It thus tends to follow the rhythm of natural speech."

Now, you my friend said that free verse is not a poetry because poetry has rhythmic patterns and etc., you said free verse does not have that so you concluded that it is not free verse.

That my friend is a DEBATE FALLACY
Doesn't mean you prove it wrong doesn't mean you prove it right.
For instance, not legalizing marijuana causes increasing number of cases, so legalizing marijuana decreases it. THAT IS WRONG.

Now, moving on
Poets have explained that free verse is, despite its freedom, not entirely free. Free verse displays some elements of form. Most free verse, for example, self-evidently continues to observe a convention of the poetic line in some sense, at least in written representations, though retaining a potential degree of linkage, however there are more traditional forms.

Therefore I disagree to your own definition of why free verse is not a poetry. It is defined that it is not entirely free.

Next,
Free verse may not have meter, rhyme, or other traditional poetic techniques a poet can still use them to create some sense of structure. A clear example of this can be found in Walt Whitman's poems, where he repeats certain phrases and uses commas to create both a rhythm and structure. Much pattern and discipline is to be found in free verse: the internal pattern of sounds, the choice of exact words, and the effect of associations give free verse its beauty.

Going back to your statement:
"Definition: Poetry is an imaginative awareness of experience expressed through meaning, sound, and rhythmic language

note it says poetry is

must have "and rhythmic language "

thus
poetry is in meter ie rhythm

free verse is not in meter/rhythm
thus free verse is not poetry as it is not in meter or rhythm".

It clearly states that free verse is not totally free.
Well, that can be proven in life and democratic country instances but I would not tackle that cause it's too far from the topic.

Even in simple ways Free Verse still possess such some of the structures a Poetry contains,
thus making it a Poetry.
