at first, i had thought that gay marriage was all wrong, however i see it differently now. what if you wish to spend the rest of your life with a person you truely love but however is the same gender? you can't help the fact that you're either a male or female. it's all about commitment that matters.

Marriage is the institution of a church, whether gay marriage is accepted by a church is not of concern to those outside the church. No religious institution, including marriage, should have legal standing. A contract of civil union should be available and legally binding to those who sign it, and there should neither be limits on the gender nor number of parties.

In accordance with the establishment clause of the constitution, the appropriate legal solution is to remove the legal standing of marriage, and replace it's function with a secular contract.

You shouldn't start a debate you are not prepared to participate in.

Modern marriage has lost virtually all of it's traditional significance(look at the divorce rates). The most significant commitments in a relationship are implicit, and do not require the acknowledgment of society, church, or state. Civil unions would more efficiently and inclusively provide the economic functions that marriage is actually useful for(risk sharing, health insurance, pensions, education, child care).

The proponent unfortunately did not defend her position, which makes it more difficult for me, and any observers to challenge and refine my/their opinions.

I have nothing more to add.

The main problem I have is not that marriage is recognized, but that it is used as a political platform and people are gullible/superficial enough to make an electoral decision based on it's religious association.

yeah i believe what we call a civil union has been accepted by our society today as marriage though it may have originated from religion the state has adopted the term as its civil union and there for instead of trying to have an entire nation stop using marriage for unions that are not religious we just implement the word marriage to stand in for the phrase civil union

You have an interesting point, but since marriage and civil unions would give gays the same legal rights, I don't see the harm in everyone calling it marriage, because there are culturally marriage is seen (usually) as the ultimate expression of love, and people want to express that.
