Pro

People should be allowed to make their own choices in life with out having their human rights taken away.
revleader5

Con

I am merely playing devil's advocate here.

I would like to know how people making their own choices has their rights taken away in the first place.

Give me something to argue about!

Pro

umm their own choices in life are not respected.
cant share work benefits
hospital visits
insurance
adoption
all the rights that come with marriage....
revleader5

Con

Just a tip, never say "ummm" in a debate.

Back to the issue, stop being so vague. I need to know exactly what they are deprived of and what they want that straight couples have.

Pro

haha it so happens that I am in a debate team. UMMM in the context that I used it in was the " are you really so incompetent that I have to list them all out for you way"
how much more obvious can it get?
1. Lets say a gay couple has been together for 20 years. One gets sick. The other may not visit him/her, know about their conditions or make decisions for them. For the simple fact that they are not married
2. Many states do not allow gay couples to adopt children
3. Lets say one works and the other doesn't. The benefits of working such as insurance does not cover the stay at home since they are not spouses
4. And maybe for the simple fact that you cant say to your friends or society that I am married to this man or woman, how you cannot declare your love to another person because it is against the law.
revleader5

Con

Well, calling me incompetent really helps your case. I'll give you that much. Haha. Reminder, just playing devil's advocate here- Why SHOULD they get the same rights? A marriage by definition is a legal bond between a man and a woman.

jlholtzapple if you do not agree with gay marriage than do not be gay but do not strip others of that right. The is so much more to this world than what is scripted in the bible. I am not trying to insult the bible in any way.

make it legal for them to get married and it won't have to be premarital.

i think the point is not address like the others are saying. i am personally against homosexuality. the act not the people. i am against pre matiral sex. homosexuality promotes this. so hate the sin not the sinner.

and honestly, please vote for the debate itself, not the topic! gays weren't defended well here! i know a lot of us feel strongly about allowing gay people to marry. and johnwooding brought up a good point: that the law isnt giving the same rights to everyone. but other than that, we need something to debate about!

johnwooding1, I am for gay marriage. I completely agree with you and I share your belief. I was just explaining the method of debating itself, not the topic.

This was a terrible debate! I have to vote pro simply because arguments were presented. Why do people think that questions are arguments? They clearly aren't, for a question to make an impact, EVERYONE has to come to the exact same conclusion and impact it. Con: 1) Don't say that you are the devils advocate. 2) Make some goddamn arguments! You cannot debate if you do not make a point. 3) DO NOT, under any circumstance, make a new claim with no impact in your final speech. It was your best and only argument and it was useless because you didn't say why that made you win, or how it's fair that the pro can' respond.
Pro: 1) DO NOT make fun or patronize your opponent EVER! It really makes you look like a jackass. 2) Avoid making sob story examples main points. They require empathy that some people might not have, it really is a bad way to debate.
I cannot believe that either of you would be on a debate team. I'm barely JV and I can tell you guys suck.
I vote pro, but I don't want to.

Ok I need to say this. How could anyone vote for the con side in this debate? All they did was ask questions that did not put forth an argument. Not that the pro side did much better, as only offered up one unwarranted claim, but the con side didn't even do that. How are people making decisions? Asking why should they get the same rights, when the pro side had said that a choice should not deprive you of human rights. It's not a particularly good argument in such a bare form like that, but it's much better than asking the question that was already (admittedly poorly) answered. I think people are voting more on bias then on actual argumentation, and that's sad.

dalzuga I am amazed if any one lacks understanding it is you and revleader5. You both are trying to force your belief system on other people. You are discriminating agianst gays. In the end it is you who lacks understanding.
