gay marriage being legalised
TS-387

Pro

As the resolution of this debate is 'gay marriage', I will be arguing for 'gay marriage', presuming that pro's argument is that gay marriage should be legalised.

On to some definitions:

marriage: /noun/ [1]
A relationship which exists between a husband (man) and wife (woman)
A similar relationship between people of the same sex
A ceremony in which two people are married to each other

gay: /adjective/ [2]
Sexually attracted to someone who is of the same sex
Of, or relating to, homosexuals
Happy and excited; cheerful and lively

Now my arguments.

Gay marriage, the marriage between two people of the same sex, has existed for thousands of years [3]. However, the Christian bible condemns such marriage, with 18:22 (Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind: it is abomination.) and 20:13 (If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them.) Leviticus both condemning homosexual acts. Stories such as the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah are also interpreted as condemning gay marriage [4] and to this day many Christians are vehemently opposed to Gay Marriage, frequently trotting out arguments such as:

1) 'Gay marriage is unnatural and goes against god's will' [5] (So is/does adultery and divorce, but you never see anyone protesting to make divorce illegal (and you probably shouldn't put too much faith in a millennia-old book which is extremely out of touch with modern society anyway))

2) 'They won't be able to have children and marriage is all about having children' [5] (by definition, marriage does not have to produce children and even if that were true, we also must make the marriage of sterile and elderly people illegal as they are also unable to produce children)

3) 'If gay marriage is legalised, children will be taught that they don't have a right to on male and one female parent and that all who say otherwise are bigots' [6] (This was an actual argument used in the LNP September 2013 Australian Election, and legalising gay marriage ≠ making heterosexual marriage illegal.)

I now hand the debate back to Con.

Also, this is my first debate, so if I'm doing something wrong could you guys please tell me in the comments? Thanks!
