grafiti art should be ok if it's artistic but if it's not artistic then i think it should be fined or painted over the grafiti that is art i think is usually speaking out of harritatge and all that jazz and i think that it should be praised instead of looked down upon becuase it has a meaning and it is art with a voice behind it

I'm not sure what you mean by OK. Do you mean legal? or just accepted?

Anyway, I think that if we are going to make some graffiti OK, we would have to make ALL graffiti OK. The government or society shouldn't have the right to tell some people that their art can be displayed and others can't. This is a clear violation of freedom of speech.

Ironically, this already happens. We do let some graffiti happen. The government or other organizations, like churches, sponsor artists to paint murals etc.

Again, I'm not sure what your argument is, but it seems like it is already true, or would discriminate between the different graffitiers(not a real word).

Let me know, looking forward to it. Thank you.

That is true and i totally hear what you are saying. However, freedom of speech is important but it cannot insult people (any race, ethnic group, nationality, religious group and so on) because then it will escalate into this huge war between blah verses blah (brown ride vs. black pride, white power vs. black power you get the point) ignorance really isnt speech...its a form of speech that was lost in translation long ago.

nevertheless i totally agree with you, because i have seen some that are some powerful stuff. my favorite on says one that said "another bullet, another gun, THAT'LL SOLVE EVERYTHING!...oh wait..." and it was all trippy and awesome.

see now that is a perfect example of graffitti that should be allowed. It has a message behind it...something to say. Not something degrading to any specific group...just in general.

but thats just me....what do you think about it?....it's always interesting to hear another persons point of view. you know? Their perspective. because perspective is the way to wisdom....at least thats what i always say.

The problem I was trying to get at is that art is subjective. We can't let the government classify what is or isn't art based on who it offends or how tasteful it may or may not be. This violates peoples freedom of speech. Everyone in this country has the right to say whatever they want, regardless of who it offends or how ignorant it should be. "I do not agree with what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it." I typically don't like using cliches, but this one REALLY applies. Whether or not we agree with the neonazis or the KKK, we still have to respect their right to voice their non-violent opinion.

If we let the government punish graffiti artists who they think don't make the grade of artisanship, this would be the ultimate violation of the first ammendment. Why should the church get a mural while a latino gang doesn't? Because the church is more societally pleasing? There is a definite 1st ammendment violation there.

I have the right to offend anyone I want, no matter how much they don't like it. We definately don't think that the civil rights movement was a bad thing, but that was possibly the most socially revolutionary movement in this country.

Giving the government the ability to set standards on expression is clearly against the constitution, which is why this doesn't really work.

So, allowing some graffitti or only artistic graffitti is problematic because the subjectivity of what is allowed/not allowed is grounds for contitutional violations. Also, its grafitti. The defacement of property shouldn't be allowed in general, whether it is artistic or not, because it is damaging.

If we allow for your proposal, the government has grounds to restrict freedom of speech and sanctions the destruction/defacement of property.

9 times out of 10 is such a lie. Vandalisim and grafitti are 2 different things...and for all of you who don't know its all art wether the people who create it are aware of it.

I have to agree with the Pro argument. It makes a lot of sense and is very well rounded. She has a lot of good info, and opinions. I feel that her comment on ignorance, not being speech is correct, if you are going to argue about something at least make sure that it is something to argue about. I thought that she has a very strong point of view and won this argument.

The problem is not freedom of speech or accepting it or banning it.

The problem lays in the vandalism of property.
Most cities do not want in fear of gangs. That is because when it was first used it was used to mark gang territories.

Some cities do have specific walls for graffiti.

No ones stopping you from tagging your own house or your building. Whether or not it applies with abandon buildings is beyond me. Although most cities usually knock down abandon buildings anyway.
