I thank Pro for instigating this debate, & I accept the challenge. I too hope that this debate would be enjoyable.

Resolution:

Definitions:

- Hadith: the collections of the reports of the teachings, deeds and sayings of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh).

- Islam: the religion founded by Prophet Muhammad (pbuh).

Topic:

- The debate is about wether or not the Hadith Collections should be deemed:

1. Reliable corpus of Sources.

2. Sources of authority in Islamic Law, Theology & Spirituality.

=> I've specified the Topic to keep things clear & manageable. If Pro wishes to change it, then so it shall be. If Pro wishes to argue against either (1) or (2), then no problem.

Standard Rules:

- The burden of proof is on Pro, for she is making the claim.

- No forfeit, no disrespect, no bare assertions & no shotgun argumentation .

- Sources must be authentic.

- In case they are in a foreign language (Arabic), a translation should be provided in a google document, or at least for the relevant parts.

=> If Pro has an issue with any of these rules, I welcome the discussion.

Best of luck.

Case:

- Since Pro has yet to make any arguments for her case, I shall make this round short. I’ll limit my case to citing verses from the Qur’an that decrees the authority of the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) aside from Qur’an itself:

1. The Qur’an dictates that following the commands of the Prophet (pbuh) is the same the commands of Allah (in the Qur’an):

* “He who obeys the Messenger has obeyed Allah ; but those who turn away - We have not sent you over them as a guardian.” (4:80) [1].

2. The Qur’an dictates that following the commands of the Prophet (pbuh) is a necessary requirement for a believer:

* “O you who believe! Obey Allah, and obey the Messenger, and render not vain your deeds.” (47:33) [2].

3. The Qur’an dictates that the Prophet (pbub) is not only a source of authority as a Lawmaker, but also as a Judge:

* “O you who have believed, obey Allah and obey the Messenger and those in authority among you. And if you disagree over anything, refer it to Allah and the Messenger." (4:59) [3].

- Therefore, the teachings of the Prophet (pbuh), i.e. those reported in Hadiths, are basis of authority in Islam beside the Quran for all believers, by the the unequivocal decree of Qur’an itself. It is thus absurd to suppose that the Qur’an is to be followed excluding the Hadith, for that would imply following the Qur’an &, at the same time, not following its decree, hence the absurdity!

Lailahaillalah Muhamdurrasulallah

1)There is no God except Allah
Well if you believe in it then believe in the Kalam(word) of God, ie, Qur'an

2)Prophet Muhammad(SAW) is the messenger of Allah
Well if you believe in it then believe in the Kalam(word) of our Prophet, ie, Sahih Hadith

..and you know, no Muslim is a Muslim if he/she doesn't believe in the complete Kalima Tayyab!

May Allah guide us!
