I believe that antibiotics have become a curse today.yeah! ofcourse, antibiotics cure small diseases of daily life, they prevent biger diseases and on and on....but have we realised that in the long run, antibioticsare actually turning out to be harmfull?i mean, in the modern world, diseases are common, thanks to pollution, our eating habits and surroundings. with more consumption of antibiotics we are slowly becoming resistant to it. that means, when we meet with a bigger disorder, thais may actually prevent us from healing quicker or god forbid, getting alright at all. simply because our body has become resistant to such medicines before.thoughts???

This helps in negating the growth of harmful bacteria in the stomach thus preventing various stomach and intestinal infections. Recently, it has been found that there has been regrowth of such useful bacteria and some of these bacteria have formed resistive strains. This, many suspect, is due to the overuse of antibiotics. Thus, in this case, antibiotic in fact, is indirectly aiding humans to contract infectious disease. Thus, it is proving to be bane for humans.
In addition to this, there have been numerous instances of antibiotic entering the human food chain. Widespread use of antibiotics in agriculture and also in livestock has created a situation, where the antibiotics, which remain in the body of the animals and plants, pass into the humans through the food cycle. This has resulted in cross resistance to the drug unwittingly in human beings. Thus, a person may be resistant to a certain antibiotic through the food chain but he/she does not know it. In future, for the same person, in case of a medical emergency, valuable time may be lost due to the person"s inability to inform the doctor about his/her resistance to the said antibiotics. Moreover, exposure to antibiotics from food chain can lead to other serious health issues for a person unknowingly.
There are various strategies through which bacterial resistance can be overcome. These are not full proof methods but are being used worldwide to overcome bacterial resistance. Let us list a few of them below:
1. Resistance modifying agents: These include phage therapy, bacteriocins, chelation vaccine, biotherapy, and probiotics. Each of these has their separate mechanism of action.
2. Host defense peptides: This is the enhancement of multifunctional properties of the natural anti-infectives such as cationic host defense peptides.
3. Antimicrobial coatings: These use the functionalization of microbial surfaces for sterilization, self-cleaning and surface protection.
Thus, the benefits of antibiotics certainly outweigh the risk. People who shout for alternative treatments like homeopathy, ayurveda, etc., in lieu of antibiotics should be made aware of the fact that the best treatment against bacteria is bacteria itself in a different form.

There are host of benefits for antibiotics at present, but that delicate balance cannot be taken for granted. This is so because most of the antibiotics are no longer sensitive to a host of organisms.

With the discovery of new antibiotics becoming few and far between, firm policies are needed to be put in place so that this wonder of science is not allowed to become a bane for humans and it continues to be useful to society. Proper prescription rules should be formulated for antibiotics so that prescriptions for antibiotics are written only in exceptional cases where firm clinical indications are established.

think that if they had been used wisely and in moderation, antibiotics would have been, and continue to be a great boon to human health. It is only the overuse of them that they have become a curse, resulting in resistant strains forming. Hospitals are where the most resistant strains are found, since a variety of antibiotics are used there. I am not a health worker, so cannot comment on whether the use there is excessive or not. What really annoys me is use of antibiotics in farm animals as a general prophylactic against disease. The antibiotics are passed on in milk, and possibly meat, and much of the population receives these antibiotics, thus producing resistant bacterial strains.
