when you impose the death penalty, you don't give the criminal the chance to rehabilitate and change, but you do it rather for the safety of others; There is always that one risk of the criminal breaking out (Escaping) and again, commiting what lacks conformity in our laws (Which we legislate based upon our interpretation of morality).

Punishments aren't necessarily imposed for people to learn, but is rather for the retribution of an offense. If the government feels that a person has commited a crime severe enough, they would believe that they deserve death.

True.

I approve of the death penalty, but am not playing devil's advocate, as that is not what this debate's about.

I await my opponent's next set of arguments.

PoliticianIntellectual is correct. Punishment are NOT necessarily imposed to one for them to learn, but is rather for retribution of an offense. And like he said, if the government feels that someone has commited a crime severe enough, they believe that the criminal deserves death (In other words, they'll believe that is warrant to the death penalty). So now, ImSomebody, you know that, in a punishment, you don't need to give the offender the chance tor rehabilitate or change.

I was going to accept this but my opponent wasn't enough of a challenge.

Anyway, anyone who thinks that the death penalty is NOT a punishment has to do some more research.
