If punishments were only imposed for that person to learn, then you would be correct, as you don't give the criminal a chance to rehabilitate and change, but rather completely remove them from existence. However, in other cases, they are imposed in retribution of an offense, as both the victim and the criminal come out evenly (Both are killed). If the criminal murdered (The act of unlawfully killing someone[1]]) a person, in retribution for that offense, it warrants the death penalty, as like said, both sides come out equal and evenly.
