i thought i'd get something started that is close to home for me

moutain top removal

this is the process of blowing up a moutain to extract the coal, this is the safest way of mining coal, but it destroys my states natural beauty

it destroys the whole maoutain and the hollows around it, the excess rock is dumped in the closest hollow, this disturbs the headwaters and increases flooding

the only other option is a mine, going into the moutain with tons of earth above you

Your point is a valid one my friend. Unfortunately your idealism gets in the way of practicality. America, as it is, is currently going through an energy crisis. Our dependence on foreign oil has negatively affected both our foreign policy and our economy. We must break free of the vice that the middle east has put us in! To do so, we must find our energy hear, in America. There are several plausible and practical solutions. They range from drilling in ANWR to providing more subsidies for alternative fuels. Within that spectrum there are many other options. Coal is a good one. Clean coal technology is making coal much more environmentally friendly. Yes, I know it is a fossil fuel, but until alternative energy becomes more effective, it is a legitimate way to break free of oil in the short term. And the most effective way to get coal is mountain top removal. If we limit the number of mountains it can be done on, this will not ruin the beauty of the region. I agree, it is a sacrifice, but things like this occasionally have to be done if only to provide people with energy.

its not that removing the moutain is more effeciant, but cheaper, it takes the miner from mining, its all up to operators and explosive techs to move the material, tunneling into a moutain is both economic and environemntally friendly

just for the record, all coal power plants are required by law to update with the clean coal equipment by 2009

but natural beauty is a terrible thing to waste, a picture cannot last over the years and habitats are also destroyed

coal is what keeps me in a job, i work in a lot of power plants in the eastern states, i'm either vacuming up a coal spill, or flyash, its hot and dangerous work and i have to wear a respirator most of the time to prevent inorganic arsenic poisoning and some of the work is dangerous, but i never think of it, i would gladly go into a shaft mine, it doesn't bother me that i may die while at my job because i know i am square with the Lord and i do not fear death

Ok first off there is no such thing as clean coal so any one who uses that to combat the global warming issue of this matter is either ignorant to this issue or believes what ever someone tells them. On to the people who say that its better to just blow the top of the mountain off to get the coal; it is simply an unethical way of getting an energy source. it destroys to much to provide an energy source that not only harms the environment but is limited so why put time into it at all. The best thing to do is for the coal companies to take the workers they have and put them to a better use such as green jobs which the people doing those jobs would create environmentally friendly and very efficient sources of energy which can not be depleted like coal or shale or oil. Things like wind turbines and hydro electric plants or even solar panels because it is through the utilization of these types of fuels that we can ever hope to break the hold the fossil fuel industry has over us
So i say that we should stop blowing the tops off our mountains and stop destroying the habitats and the wilderness and the ecosystems that are on and surround them because in the end it is our children and our grandchildren that will have to clean up the messes we make and they will have to live in the world we destroyed!

about the jobs, yeah both the construction of the scrubbers in plants and a shaft mine create hundreds of jobs and the picture, its not the same and i go into a mine to save a moutain, here's an idea, keep the moutain and build wind generators, i think they look good in the scenary

So apparently you guys don't care if we send someone INto the mountian and they die of collapse, all because we want to save a "mountian" take a picture it lasts longer

i agree far too much to debate you. conservation/preservationism is a wonderful thing and should be supported simply for its intrinsic value. if i were you, i would bring up arguments about alternative energy (creating more jobs, etc.) that way you can avoid mining altogether. but that's just me

more power to you hundredhighways.

Ooo. Interesting. Colorado has a similar problem in oil shale.
It is estimated that Colorado's western slope contains more oil than the Middle East. You may question why we don't just drill it out and drop the Middle East fast like and all. It's not like drilling for oil anywhere else because the structure of the shale makes it impossible to just pull the oil out of it. The extraction process is complicated and destructive. It's a very tricky question. Do we begin extracting the oil and say hello to oil independence, but goodbye to some pristine natural wonders?
