Nurses should wear hats as part of their unifom to give them a more professional look while they are on duty in the work place. supervisors should make it a responsibility for nurses to wear hats.

Thank you for the challenge Charmaine32.

Before I continue, I'd like to notify the voters that there has been a resolution change, the resolution has been set within the comment box because my opponent made an error (we all make mistakes, so please don't vote off of that). The new resolution is:

"NURSES WEARING HATS VS NOT WEARING HATS"

http://www.debate.org...

_______________________________

My opponent only presents one argument, that argument is as follows,

"Nurses should wear hats as part of their unifom to give them a more professional look while they are on duty in the work place. supervisors should make it a responsibility for nurses to wear hats."

The reason I stand in negation to this statement is for three reasons.

They are dangerous, unnecessary and uncomfortable.

_______________________________

First: If we stand in affirmation that would allow nurses to wear any type of hat.

This means you'd go to the hospital and see nurses wearing:
-Baseball caps
-Feathered hats
-Party hats
-Top hats etc.

http://www.millinerytechniques.com...

The negative impact is obvious, these hats could cause a distraction to the doctors, the nurses and other medical workers, preventing them from saving lives. Furthermore, the hats may pose a fire safety hazard, like straw and costume hats.

_________________________________

Second: Nurse's hats are unnecessary.

Yes, uniformity is at times a positive necessity in any work environment. BUT nurses already have a uniform, for instance look at this picture:

http://upload.wikimedia.org...

This is obviously a nurse, she can easily be pointed out as a nurse in almost any hospital. Uniformity is important, but the cap is an extra hassle and it shouldn't be a responsibility given by a supervisor, as my opponent advocates. If having a hat is a responsibility, that would mean nurses would get on probation or even FIRED, simply for not having a hat. This would mean less nurses in a world that is in desperate need of nurses.

http://www.news-medical.net...

Third: Having a hat on all day is uncomfortable.

Imagine having to wear a hat for up to 12 hours a day. Now, imagine having to wear a hat that long, while at the same time saving lives. Nurses have an obligation to make people feel comfortable in a scary place, they aid doctors and create a safer working environment. Making it a necessity for nurses to wear hats all day long is quite uncomfortable. The only time that nurses should wear hats are whenever it is absolutely necessary. Like when they are dealing with patients who have lice. Other than that, the hats are not as important as their many other duties and they shouldn't be a burden in a nurses day-to-day job.

Thank you for this opportunity, I look forward to your responses.

Thank you DrAlexander for your great response. let me get one thing clear, I was referring to nurses caps that comes with their uniforms, not the hats and caps you mentioned. I do not agree with what you have stated and I will give you three reasons.

Nurses should wear nurses caps, to give their uniform a professional look, and not having others seeing their hair while they are at work

my second argument is Nurses should wear nurses caps for hygiene proposes, it is very unsanitary when a nurse is taking care of their clients and their hair is all over flying everywhere.

Nurse sometimes have to serve their clients food and drinks and I strongly believe for that reasons caps should remain a part of all nurses uniforms.

Your welcome Charmaine.

Clarification at this point in your case, especially whenever it changes you initial premise is unfair on my behalf. You initiated this debate through a position that advocated the following point:

"Nurses should wear hats as part of their uniform to give them a more professional look"

YOU gave that as the ONLY point within your case. I agreed to debate under said circumstances. This is the only point I'll argue. You bringing up hygiene and health is outside of what you initially stated. For this reason, your first point in your rebuttal will be the ONLY point I will address.

_______________________________

My opponent's first point reads,

"Nurses should wear nurses caps, to give their uniform a professional look, and not having others seeing their hair while they are at work"

Professional looks have been achieved already through the nurse's outfit. I have explained all of this already within the second point in my case. As a matter of fact, my opponent doesn't attack my case, all she does is add more points, which is unfair at this point in the debate. It's similar to me starting a debate about evolution, then moving on to talk about how global warming does not existed without offering a link. This is unfair, for that reason I urge you to vote CON.

________________________________

My opponent tries to fix her mistake about the hats issue, but, as I pointed put earlier, since she did not specify that implies that she is supporting the usage of any and ALL kinds of hats. She doesn't refute this, she just once again changes her position. The only attack she makes thereafter is that she doesn't agree with me, which is not an appropriate way to refute a case. If it were than I could just say "I disagree with my opponent so vote CON". The disagreement between two people is implied with a debate, it is not a method of refutation.

If you did not understand what type of caps i was referring to you should have asked, so for you to say that I am not fair you are wrong. Voters please vote for PRO becase i believe that my argument is stronger and i made my point.

My opponent once again fails to offer any arguments. This is one of the major flaws on this site, people who start debates without the intention of actually debating. It upsets me that she may still get a few votes from other people whom don't care about substance. I am not a semantics debater or a devil's advocate debater, I only debate in the pursuit of teaching and learning. Unfortunately, I have learned nothing of true substance within this debate. So here goes the reasons for as to why you should vote in my favor.

My opponent offers ONE legitimate argument... I refuted it twice.

I offered THREE arguments....My opponent never refuted.

She states that I could've asked for clarification in the comments section...

in an upset tone*
I should not have to ask for clarification, everything should be made clear within your "case"
Furthermore, I offered you the opportunity to give me ANOTHER challenge...18 hours ago! You NEVER responded. I gave you the opportunity, you forfeited it. That is not my fault.

http://www.debate.org...

My opponents is far away from upholding her burden of proof.

Please vote off substance, please vote CON.

Okay i have read through this debate and I would like to comment...charmaine in debate you cannot give a case and change your argument completely in your rebuttal. So you leave the judges no choice but to agree with Alexander. Even if changing your argument was allowed you do not make any arguments toward his arguments which basically means you agree with him. At this point i would vote for the Negative side, but good luck to both of you :)
