partiotism should be taught in schools because if we didnt have patriatism then we would not have a school. if there was no patriatsim the country would fall apart.

Alright well i guess i would like to start this off with the definition of Patriotism. Patriotism;–noun, devoted love, support, and defense of one's country; national loyalty.

With saying that im not really sure you can say we wouldn't have school but i guess i can take that as a personal opinion?
I think teaching patriotism in school is completely unnecessary because i don't think that the support of there country should be forced upon them. I think that if there is something going on in the country that they are not behind they should be able to openly express there disappointment.

Patriotism is pretty much all around us i just don't think thats something else we should add to the curriculum, you can learn about patriotism from any where. I don't think it should be in the schools.

well. if there wasn't a national loyalty there would not be any government because the wars would never be won because the people would not care if we were being blown up or fought. so yes. and yes it should be forced upon them because them because the kids need to be taught about the wars that we are fighting over seas or in our backyard.

Teaching students about wars and teaching students about patriotism are two different things. We learn about wars and such in history class. If people aren't practicing patriotism that doesn't mean we won't have a government, it just means we have a government that has people that don't completely support them.

I'm not saying NO ONE should practice patriotism I'm just saying i don't think it's something else we need in school? We have patriotism EVERYWHERE we learn about it every day from national holidays to simple tv commercials. I don't think it should be in schools.

patriotism is taught in one class. a history type class. and thats not really teaching it. it is teaching about the past patriotism. it is all around but noone understands it. if we teach about it than we could learn more about it.

I think everyone understands it, it's simply taking pride in you're country and supporting you're country?! But i don't think we need to push people into that, if you support it good for you if you don't alright. I think we already have enough teaching about it in our history classes not to mention the pledge of allegiance, flag raising, national anthem. I mean hell we have recruiters at least 3 times a week?! you don't think thats enough?!. Nick at our school we have a memorial that we raised so much money for?! You don't think thats patriotic enough?

You can't teach patriotism, especially in the way that the 'pro' describes it. That sounds more like mindless following, and not real patriotism. If it is insincere, it isn't called patriotism, its called forced submission to a authoritarian regime.

Real patriotism is developed through service to one's own nation. It lives in the belief that there is good in the world, and that some of it exists in one's own country.

I believe that patriotism should be taught in schools. Look at the pledge of allegiance. Why are they taking that away from schools? Young children are going to grow up believing that it is wrong to be a patriot. I just don't get what the big deal is. I mean i wouldn't go as far as some countries do as to beat children for not swearing allegiance to their country but at least motivate them to love their home and protect it at all costs.

I think the uniting after 9/11 was a psuedo-uniting. I think we only united because of our own fear, frustration, and utter shock at what happened. Because, if you notice, things are back to normal with people as un-united as ever...

Harlon: The "clarion call for freedom"?

Schools are a great place to teach children how to be productive members of society, but that ISN'T what they are concerned about these days. School want funds. The only way to get funds is by getting children to pass standardized tests. This need to pass requires the teachers to only teach HOW to pass a test.

In addition, I still believe that patriotism is so entrenched in our society that an additional attempt to "teach it in schools" isn't required. I am for being patriotic and loving your country (and making sure kids know this), but that is already taught in schools. I also believe that students should ONLY learn patriotism (love for country), they should also learn about other cultures, societies, ideologies, etc.

right on, kels. schools are the most effective way to teach our children how to be productive members of society, so it makes sense that patriotism be taught in school.

ineffablesquirrel: the only reason you think this subject is 'mute' is because you can't hear the clarion call for freedom.

Loving your country and supporting your country is not the same as loving and supporting your Gov't. We should love our country and take pride in our country , if you don't why live here, you may as well move. You don't have to agree with everyone but in my eyes agreeing or disagreeing with your country you must feel some Patriotism or why would you care. Every student should learn love for their country and learn to take pride in being an American. If you don't like it here , why live here??????This country is strongest when it unites and I wish we could find that place of compromise and unity that we found after 9/11 without the terror happening again. Do you remember the love and pride all too after that moment. unfortunately it seems to take an act of terror to unite this country...and that makes me sad... LOve your country or find a new one.... you dont have to love a politician but have some pride in your country.

to "stupidmidget": "The kids" are learning about the wars that have been fought domestically and overseas. It's called history and global issues class. There are ways of teaching kids without FORCING them to learn about patriotism. I think we push enough things onto kids and they get enough patriotism from the general American society. Americans are the most overconfident (besides perhaps the French) concerning love for their country and loyalty to it. I think this subject is mute. Patriotism is entrenched in everything we, as Americans, do, say, read, see, and experience.

clearly, you won't be invited to the party.

"Also, they'll break all of our schools." Really? Will they? School stomping party, everyone's invited?

This assertion, as well, is not logical or based on fact. If you can back your statement up with some facts, then I'm willing to learn.

It makes perfect sense to me.

If we don't support the government, they won't support us. Also, they'll break all of our schools.
