That UAVs are a useful tool is not a very debatable topic. That they are integral to our success is.

Though there is the obvious benefit of keeping a pilot out of harms's way, there are also numerous detractors to the use of military drones. Probably the biggest issue is that they are being used in contrary to a country's sovereignty, sometime with deadly military action as the result. If we flew a plane in to do these same mission, many times this would be considered to be an act of war. And rightfully so.

We have fought wars for hundreds of years, all the time improving our technology to be more efficient. But, unmanned drones should be considered to be just like any other gun, missile, troop, etc, and should only be deployed in a situation where deploying those assists is acceptable.

Are they "crucial" to our success? Not at all. They are merely an asset.

Again, before we label remote drones as crucial to our defense, we have to consider what that label means in regards to our enemies. If its crucial to us, isn't it also crucial to other nations? Just like the recent incursion of a drone of unknown origin into Israel, are our flights into other countries somehow MORE crucial? Can we really say our incursions into someone else's airspace are ok because it's crucial to our defense yet not expect another country to also violate our airspace in the same manner for the same reason?

Again, no, drone operations are not crucial to our own defense, and we should remain guarded in labeling it as such lest that label be used in an argument against us.

My final argument is this. Is it crucial to our defense to covertly enter another country and kill someone who is not currently attacking us? Again, how would this be any different than a foreign power flying an armed drone into US airspace and killing a US Military arms manufacturer why he suns beside his pool? There is very little difference. These things should be left to information gathering or use in actual wartime.

All that said, I love UAVs. I love all of their capabilities. But they are not crucial to our defense, in act they are more useful in our aggression.
