There's a clear lack of clarity about the aspects intended for this debate. You did not clarify what do you mean by 'better individuals'.
However, generally speaking, reading does play a huge rule in terms of broadening one's knowledge about all sorts of topics, that alone could be a viable criteria to determine weather you are a 'better individual' or not, since an educated person is usually more successful in seeing the bigger picture than an uneducated person.
