I believe that if a tree falls in the woods it does not make a sound because sound is vibrations and if there is a collision between to solid objects there will always be vibration and therefor there will be sound.
fireimp_237

Pro

Good thought, however, I have to disagree. While a sound might be physically composed of vibrations, it means nothing if not heard. And, if something means nothing, it just as well doesn't exist.

I do see your point here, but a debate has to be argued with facts, and what you stated may seem logical but is just theory.
fireimp_237

Pro

Its not theory actually... It is fact. Look at it this way- its like history. Sure, history is written down in books, but in actuality exists in the mind of people, for, if it was solely in books, it could be altered to say whatever a government wanted it to say, such as in the novel, 1984. By living in the minds of people, it is made "real". That said, the mind can be controlled and changed to believe what it needs, meaning everything "real" can be controlled. The whole concept of sound itself could be an illusion presented through warped minds. Since there is no one in this forest to hear this so called "real sound", no mind to capture it in its pure state, it does not exist.

The mind does control many things. However, the fact that sound is that of vibrations is a proven fact. Take for instance the "Magic School Bus", a show based on FACTS to help younder kids understand science. In the episode the teacher takes the student on a magical trip to learn about sounds, and in this episode it proves that vibrations cause sound. The vibrations in the air vibrate the ear drum and enable us to hear sound. A tree falling in the forest would cause vibrations and if there were someone near, the vibrations would vibrate the ear drum and enable the person in the forest to hear the tree fall. Whether there is someone in the forest or not, the tree causes vibrations when falling, there for it does make sound.

You based your "facts" on a show with "magic" in the title. Sorry, but I don't see how "magical" and "proves" can go together scientifically. However, you yourself said that this hypothetical "sound" exsists when "the vibrations in the air vibrate the ear drum", which means that "sound" is actually the reaction of a vibrating eardrum, not vibrations themselves. Therefore, according to your own definition, if no one is around to hear a tree falling in the forest, it DOES NOT make a sound.

Spelling and Grammar changed to Pro. Con's first argument gave the impression he was confused about which side he represented.

Before/After debate: Pro
Sound is not vibrations, rather perceived vibrations at certain decibel levels by different beings with receptors which put those vibrations into perspective. Without a being to perceive those vibrations, the matter vibrated will follow the laws of physics, lose intensity, and disappear without ever being perceived. No sound perception= no sound.

Conduct: Tie
Both showed bad conduct in assuming their position was right simply because they said so.

Spelling and Grammar: Tie
No major mistakes on either side.

Convincing arguments: Tie
Neither debater presented convincing arguments, therefore there was not a "more" convincing argument.

Sources: Tie
No sources were provided by either debater.

Sola Gratia, voting as a Cleaner.

Before the debate, I had no personal feeling about the resolution. After the debate, PRO convinced me.

I think CON slightly edged PRO in conduct. PRO seemed a little peevish.

Spelling and Grammar: PRO. CON's first argument was very bad in this area but he improved.

Arguments: CON rather oddly conceded the debate in his first sentence: "I believe that if a tree falls in the woods it does not make a sound..." His argument overall was incoherent, but his later ones improved drastically. PRO was slightly peevish, and his brouhaha about "The Magic School Bus" was unmerited. That show, as CON said, is just for the instruction of children; a metaphor. Not to mention that no actual magic takes place. Therefore, PRO's attempt to negate that source fails. PRO wins by a nose.

Sources: None.

All in all, PRO's arguments were more convincing. CON neglected to mention that other creatures with auditory organs would almost certainly be present when a tree fell; birds and squirrels and other creatures of the forest and suchlike. CON wins overall.
