The Electoral College is unfair in several ways. First, it gives more weight to votes cast in small states.Without the Electoral College, candidates would campaign to get as many individual votes as possible in every state, instead of focusing on states that provide key electoral votes. Each vote would make a difference and voters would feel they truly had a stake in the elections, which could lead to increased voting across the country. With a system of direct election, all votes would be equally important and equally sought after. We need to abolish the Electoral College and make our presidential elections one person, one vote.

Refutations

"First, it gives more weight to votes cast in small states. Without the Electoral College, candidates would campaign to get as many individual votes as possible in every state, instead of focusing on states that provide key electoral votes."

By giving some weight to small states, those states are able to be just as important as larger states, so candidates campaign there. If there was no electoral college, candidates would never spend their time in small states like New Hampshire and Nevada and rather just go to populated areas. The electorate in those smaller states would be less informed and votes less than in larger states.

Furthermore, my opponent does not specify what a small state is. I consider it less than 10 electoral votes. The Electoral College is actually based on population. California has a lot of people so it has the most electoral votes. Wyoming has very little people so it has less electoral votes.

Also, it is likely that the system would not change without the Electoral College. Candidates go to certain areas to get votes. If Ohio has a lot of swing voters, then the candidates would go there no matter if there was an electoral college or not. The college only simplifies things. [1]

Argument

The Electoral College was formed as a compromise system. The founding fathers were generally against the tyranny of a democratic majority, so they made this system. The compromise is that since states create the national government, the states decide the president. It is impossible to get rid of the Electoral College because it is in the Constitution.

To get rid of the Electoral College is to get rid of the Constitution and the states.

That was a waste of a debate! I'm opposed to the electoral college and I think I could defeat 1Historygenius in a debate!

It is supposed to elect presidents and does not change any outcome.

Actually the electoral college has changed the outcome of an election. It should be removed.
