I think that criminals who are sentenced to life imprisonment or death penalty could be more efficiently used for scientific experiments. As the result, the science would get additional driver for development, and such fields as biology, physiology and psychology would flourish.

There is a lot of sense in such an approach. The logic is very clear.

However, logic is not the best guidance in such quiestions. When logic is the only measure of rightfulness, such things as slavery and murderment of useless members of society (old or ill people, for example) might seem just. But we all understand, that they are not. Why?

Because apart logic, there is such thing as morality. Everyone understand, internally, what is right and what is not. None of us would kill an invalid just because he does not bring any utility to the society. Lives of such people (criminals, just as invalids) put them into circumanstences which do not leave any chance for them to live normal life. And such people need the support from other member of society.
