Homework reinforces classroom instruction. Students need to practice what they learn on their own time, at their own pace.
Homework teaches responsibility. The responsibilities of homework mirror the responsibilities adults face at work and at home every day.
Homework prepares kids for higher grades. If students aren"t given homework in elementary school, they won"t be able to handle middle school, high school, or college.

First of all, thank you for having me.

Please correct me if I"m wrong, I read your argument so the essence is this:
1. The school does not have enough hours to teach the material, therefore some of it must be done at home.
2. It is a school task to teach kids responsibility.
3. Our entire education system revolves around homework, therefor we cannot remove it.

The right solution to 1. is to permit more hours to school. If we must continue standardized education, we must let it be a choice to learn actively in students free time. Homework interrupts this. Very few adults do homework for their job, but they do work longer hours than kids in school. A more realistic picture of what the future holds for them would therefore be longer schooldays and no homework.

The school has no right to decide what traits an individual should possess. It is up to the individual and until the come of age, their parents, right to make a person, right to pass on and choose values. A school can show the value of responsibility in various ways without involving homework, such as doing group activities.

We will never develop if we do things because thats how we"ve always done it, just like we will never develop if we consistently do the easy thing. I see keeping homework as choosing not to develop based on fear and laziness, and I cannot support keeping homework on that base. On top of that, there is no proof that students become smarter with homework. And is that not the point of having a school?

Another reason we should stop using homework is that it prevents education. It is very easy to memorize a formula, a battle year and even easier to download an analysis, but to understand the formula, why the battle happened and to do your own analysis? That is completely different, much harder and mush more beneficial to the individual and everyone, in the long run. Why? Because it expands the horizon of the learner and enables the individual to think for themselves, making a more intelligent society.
