I believe students shouldn't be given homework because it is a waste of time. In high school most of the students don't even do homework because of work, family issues, and prior engagements.

Thank you for the debate. I will be arguing that students should be given homework and that homework is beneficial. First however I would like to clear up the notion of students not doing homework. Whether most students do or don't do homework is irrelevant to the debate. We are debating whether students should be given homework or not. Claiming that most students don't do homework anyway is an invalid argument for whether or not it should be given or not.

Now onto my Arguments:
1) Enhances skills:
Homework gives students the opportunity to demonstrate intellectual skills learned in class and helps to increase and maintain these skills. Increasing and learning new skills is an extreme benefit to students.

2) Preparation:
Helps prepare students for big and important exams which may determine their future aspirations e.g College, jobs etc.

3) Participation:
Increases each student"s individual involvement in applying specific skills and knowledge while enjoying learning.

4) Personal development:
Homework increases and makes students aware about responsibility, time management, reward from effort, self-confidence, all while recognizing student talents.

5) Parent-Teacher Communications:
Enables teachers to inform families and involve them in children"s curricular activities and keep families aware of topics that are taught in school and how their children are progressing in general.

6) Student Interactions:
Homework encourages students to work together on assignments or projects and to motivate and learn from each other, while building friendships.

Now here are some statistics on the benefits of homework:

1) Harris Cooper (1994) presents immediate and long-term effects of homework:

Immediate: Students retain information and understand material better. Critical thinking and concept formation are increased. Information processing is improved, and the curriculum in enriched.
Long-term academic: Learning is encouraged during leisure time. Attitude toward school is improved. Study habits and skills are better.
Long-term non-academic: Students have greater self-direction and self-discipline. Time management is easier for students. Students are more inquisitive and participate in more independent problem solving.

2) Nancy Paulu (2000) indicates that parents can reap benefits from homework, also. The assignment of homework can help them learn about and become involved in their child's education. They can also communicate more with their children and their schools. Perhaps most importantly, parents who promote homework can assist teachers in creating a lifelong love of learning.

Also two hours' homework a night linked to better school results, according to a recent study (http://www.theguardian.com...)

These are some of the reasons why I feel that students should indeed be given homework

I think homework should be given but student's need to be given more homework so they can remember and they should be given homework over the summer and vacations so they don't forget. That is why other countries are smarter than us because they do homework all day and on the weekends.
