I believe that students shouldn't have to do homework. 1. they spend six hours at school, five days a week. 2. they need time to relax and time to spend with their family and friends. 3. majority of high school students have jobs to go to after school. 4. the Australian government is now thinking about adding another day to the school week, plus longer hours. 4. if the students are pushed too much, they will become frustrated and most likely give up on their schooling altogether.

By doing extra work outside of the school, school administrators are making sure that children are keeping up with their studies. How can we be sure that all of the students are on the same level if they fail to do the work? We will not know who is ahead and who needs extra help. Many students are hesitant to straight out ask for assistance for fear of being publicly criticized.
By doing homework, we are preparing ourselves for college. College professors do not care that you have other classes or jobs; it is their job to teach you. That is what they will do no matter your situation. If students do not get practice at doing work outside of class, they will be completely unprepared for college. This may result in bad grades and getting held back.
While it is true that a period of relaxation is good for the mind, one also needs to keep it active. Spending 30 minutes playing around then heading off to do some homework would be beneficial in the long run. It keeps your mind running and active, while giving it a sufficient ammout of time to rest and reorganize.
Homework was included for many reasons, a few being that it keeps the mind active, prepares us for college and later jobs, and allows teachers to see where we are in our studies. If we do not require homework to be done after school hours, students will blow it off watching TV or playing on the computer. While it is okay to watch TV or play on the computer, it puts our brain on "mute" and prevents it from fully organizing the information learned from that school day. That makes it more likely that the student will forget all he/she learned.

Keeps an active mind

I look foward to my opponents' rebuttal.

While I wish this debate had been more of a challenge, I hope that you all see my points and agree. Doing homework outside of school is beneficial in the long run.

Homework only makes me less motivated. They force us to spend too much time on pointless subjects we don't even care for...I understand it's too improve our future, but most of my homework is just silly and pointless.

Well, if school is supposed to prepare them for life then I say yes to homework. In any career you undertake you will have to take time and study on your own in order to be successful. Our students are lagging in math and science and we don't have time to let the get lazy.
