no. It takes so much time and energy to make ethanol. then once you burn it wont give you as much miles. For example, you might need 3,000 stalks of sugarcane to make this kind of gas and when you go to burn it, you will go three miles before having to refill your tank. By the way that was just an example. I did not at all do the math for that. It was just n example. Your turn.................

I think ethanol fuels are a good thing. It will increase the net value of corn/other plants used for this fuel, thus stimulating the economy and is a renuable resource. Oil, as much as there may or may not be out there, WILL dry out sooner or later. Then what? Without some kind of alternate fuel every vehicle in existance right now will be absolutly useless. By the year 2030, its estimated that there will be over 1200000000 cars in the world, not to mention all the ships, planes, motorcycles, trains, helicopters, etc. SOME kind of fuel is needed to be researched, whether electric (okay), water (outstanding), or biofuels(next best). Since we are arguing about ethanol, I'll keep my argument down to that alone. So here's the main reasons why its good:

1) Environmnetally friendly: Ethanol is better than gas. It has 30% less carbon monoxide emissions than oil, and the fumes biodegrade and help the soil and groundwater. If put into effect it will reduce smog pollution drastically, and thats definetly a plus.

2)Economic: Ethanol is created by corn and other plants. For the sake of argument, I'll just refer to it as corn. Anyway, Ethanol sales will boost the production and value of corn across the world. Farmers will gain massive profits from these sales, and it will create thousands of new jobs, overall, stimulating the economy. Now you'll argue that it takes away from food sales. This is true, but really think about it... how many food products do you really eat that has corn in it? ALot actually, but about 96% of that is just high fructos corn syrup, the preservative thats fueled the massive amount of obesity in America lately. Without that, not much else you eat has THAT much corn in it. The only reason corn sales are so high right now is because of the syrup sales, because it is America's primary natural crop, and had to sell it somehow. Thus they made fructose syrup, causing obesity. SO really, taking it away from the food industry is a positive from all angles except theirs.

Even if your greatly exagerated statement on mileage is true, and I doubt it is, especially about only going three miles on a full tank. Its true that at the moment, ethanol fuel does give less mileage per gallon than gasoline, but I think thats only because we don't yet have the right technology. With enough research, I'm sure scientists will find ways to expand the miles per gallon of ethanol for cars, its only in the present day that we scorn it. SO, even if that is true now, I doubt it will be in the future.

Currently it takes about the same amount of energy to make ethanol from corn as the corn provides. In other words there is no gain. In fact, there may be a loss.
In addition to this, the food benefit corn provides is lost.

I don't know if it's possible for the US to produce enough ethanol to run all her cars.

Much better alternatives exist e.g. biodiesel, electric cars and bicycles.
