All of our thought processes are conducted in language, so really our entire existence or essence or soul, however we phrase it, is inextricably bound up to and with the languages we speak. Mastering it would tech us more about human kind as a whole.In short helps maintain feelings of cultural kinship. Students or not, they should still be expected to master a language."

I agree that it is the way we communicate and that it helps us in life but, you can't oblige someone to master a language, if the way they speak is enough to communicate with others then they don't need to master it. In the end it also depends on what job you have, your environment etc...
