The old testament (Genesis in particular) should not be taken literally. The Bible is a book made to explain the making of the earth and the workings of god to men with the scientific knowledge of two year olds. The best way to explain science to a young child is to tell a story using medefores, so, God being the wisest being in the universe, he used them.

My opponent and I seem to agree that God exists and helped inspire the Bible. However, we differ on taking the reading literally. So, I will first show a few verses where the Bible claims to speak plainly, truthfully, and literally.

Proverbs 8:8-9 NKJV

8 All the words of my mouth are with righteousness;

Nothing crooked or perverse is in them.

9 They are all plain to him who understands,

And right to those who find knowledge.

Hmmm... they are all plain to him who understands. And right (correct) to those who find knowledge.

Here we go again:
2 Corinthians 4:2 NKJV
2 But we have renounced the hidden things of shame, not walking in craftiness nor handling the word of God deceitfully, but by manifestation of the truth commending ourselves to every man’s conscience in the sight of God.

Seems rather incriminating. Nothing hidden. Nothing crafty or exaggerated.

So the Bible says it speaks literally. So it is pretty hard to take parts literally when both the OT and NT claim to be written as is, no strings attached.
