The constitution clearly states that 'no person except a natural born citizen shall be eligible to the office of the United states' Why is cruz still running?
DerKurbis

Con

Ted Cruz's mother was an American citizen. This makes him an American citizen, even though he was born in Canada. He also meets the other requirements for being President of the United States: being at least 35 years old and living in the United States for at least 14 years. This could also strengthen American-Canadian relations, having a president born in Canada.

Look you said he had other requirements to be president, what if someone was not born in america but was from ISIS but his mother was American. He ends up being a terrorist and now he can also run for president? Your point made not sense. Ted Cruz is a US citizen but he is not a natural born citizen. Which proves he cannot run for president. America does not have the greatest ties to Canada, just saying. WE are closer to the Kurds than Canada. Bottom line is that if ur not born in the USA then u can't be commander and chief or run for president.

Con

If one of his parents was a natural-born citizen, which Cruz's mother was, he can run for president. Politifact states that most legal experts agree that a natural-born citizen does not have to go through a naturalization process to become a citizen, just affirming my point. If a candidate was a suspected terrorist, I believe that the voters would have enough sense to not vote for him or her. You also said that the United States and Canada do not have the best relations, so then wouldn't Cruz as president help US-Canada relations?

Cruz cannot run as the constitution says. Clearly i don't care about canada us relations. Last time i checked u didnt write the constitution.
DerKurbis

Con

Indeed, I did not write the Constitution. That has nothing to do with the argument. Any citizen that does not have to go through naturalization can run for president. Ted Cruz did not have to go through any naturalization process. Ergo, he can run for president.

This debate really didn't cover the core issue (which is very interesting) as to the definition of a natural born citizen. Clearly McCain wasn't born in the US, but on a military base abroad and the issue didn't come up then.

I've seen similar debates and there is a lot of controversy among legal scholars as to what the framers intended by the words "Natural born citizen".

The Pro (He is eligible) argument is that Natural Born citizen means that he was a citizen at birth, which he was by virtue of his mother, versus being naturalized. Although it is still debated, there is a strong consensus among legal scholars that this is the correct definition.

The Con side (he is not eligible) is that Natural Born is only conferred by birth on US soil.

Reasons for voting decision: Only Con used sources. Pro made very senseless allusions, while Con was able to use legal terms to signify why Ted Cruz can indeed run for President, citing the fact that as long as you do not go through a naturalization process, you can run for President.
