Instead of dedicating more than half to the military and prisoners they should make our society better and more educated. That's how civilizations develop. There's too many people who can't go to college and better themselves which adds up to more poverty and struggling. Universities have become more of a business by using supply and demand tactics.

It's easy!

Note, you are assuming the government is better at making decisions because it has the power to tax and spend by threat of force. This is rarely the case. If students were able to get an education that would improve their income in the future, then someone would pay to get that profit in the future. In other words, there would be a private market for student loans.

But in fact, the vast majority of students waste their education majoring in liberal arts and psychology. They do this because they know that most of the education you get in college simply makes you socially fit to work for whatever class your family is in. It is really family status that is the best predictor of future wealth today. Most of the other benefits people get in college are simply networking.

It is clear that if a student does well in school, studies hard, learns skills like science and math, that he can do well. There are lots of private scholarships and loan programs and the rest. Our country needs engineers. They don't need a bunch of lazy people who graduate with useless degrees in the liberal arts.

Education is not the solution to our economy's problems. We are becoming a highly technological society with small number of very highly skilled engineers providing the means for the capitalist class to get rich. There is no room in our economy for a large body of people with liberal arts degrees and other worthless things.
