the "z" viruse
Debate Rounds (3)
Rabies are contracted through saliva, usually from a bite
The Latin meaning for rabies is " madness, rage, fury"
Could there ever be a virus that affects motor skills, brings on a desire for intense feeding and causes loss of memory?
It's not a matter of "if" it's a matter of "when"
Not saying they'll be as dumb and as "dead" as they are in movies either
Virus- An ultra microscopic, metabolically inert infectious agent that replicates only within the cells of living hosts. Composed of an RNA or DNA core, a protein coat, and in more complex types, a surrounding envelope.
Zombie- The body of a dead person given the semblance of life, but mute and will-less by a supernatural force or some evil purpose.
Viruses are simple machines. they lie in our environment and wait for the right host to come about an take the virus into their respiratory lining. stomach lining, breaks in the skin etc.... When inside of the respective host a virus takes protein manufactured by the ribosomes of a cell to make new viruses, which then burst out of the cell and proceed to infect additional cells. The viruses sole purpose is to reproduce within the cell and move along. By this fact, a virus is not capable of 'possessing' a person's motor skills as it has neither the means, nor the abilities to. This can be seen as a means of reproduction, however viruses cannot actively control humans motor skills because they are not alive and cannot process the necessary skills to do so.
All specific species of viruses evolved to infect a single animal, they have done so in a way that viruses can neither kill off their selected host (and therefore themselves) and so their selected host does not have a strong enough immune system to kill off the virus. This is called a Natural Host and every virus has one, if a virus were to jump species and infect a human, it could not survive for an extended period of time (as in the case of a zombie) without dying.
Finally, the symptoms necessary to create a zombie are not possible. Symptoms of illnesses actually come from responses by the human body. A fever is not caused by a virus, it is caused by the hypothalamus (which regulates body temperature) rising the host's internal temperature in order to kill off the virus with heat. A cough is the bodies way of ridding the throat from excess mucous and tissue (generated by the immune cells) . To create zombie-like symptoms, a virus must be able to attack the perfect regions of the body and the perfect proteins to make the body react in a way that may appear zombie-like.

In your introduction you made the following statements-
1) A virus from the same family as rabies effectively kills an aggressive form of brain cancer.
2)Could there ever be a virus that affects motor skills, brings on an intense desire for feeding and causes loss of memory
3)It's not a matter of 'if' it's a matter of 'when'
To address point '1' I would very much like to see where you happened to stumble upon that fact. In order to have a truly valid argument all those who view this debate must be able to see the sources upon which you base your argument upon. Unless in your conclusion you are able to cite all of the sources used in your introduction in order to validate your argument.
In point '2' you neglect the blood brain barrier. in order for the virus to affect motor skills, desire, and loss of memory it must make it through the blood brain barrier (BBB). Humans have evolved to keep most all substances out of the brain. The only things that can make it through the BBB are nutrients and oxygen carried by blood. In order for this proposed 'z' virus to carry out any single symptom that you listed a virus must get through the BBB which can only be opened when subjected under high amounts of radiation.
Point '3' states that a zombie outbreak is inevitable and yet you fail to explain on a molecular level how such a thing could happen. To convince people who are voting on this debate that your side is correct, you must provide beyond a reasonable doubt that a zombie outbreak from a virus can happen.
