before the soviets invaded afghanistan in the late 1970s, the country thrived in its own culture and was a community based on religion and peace. with the russian invasion came the introduction of communism, a political ideology that afghanistan did not accept. to fight against the domino theory, the united states sent aid to osama bin ladin and other terrorist organizations that banded together to fight off the soviets and remove them from afghan soil. however the taliban then became obsessed with its own power and control, and usurped power from the soviets only to hold onto it themselves rather than restore it to the community or previous afghan rule.

today, bin ladin uses extremist brain washing techniques along with (mostly) terrorism to get afghan citizens to conform to his beliefs/rules. the situation in afghanistan is similar to nazi control of the jews. people are being killed unjustly for little to no reason at the hand of a violent terrorist group that commits heinous crimes in the name of allah or god. that kind of behavior does not reflect afghan values but rather the values of those who have taken totalitarian control and the rights of the people of afghanistan.

i support the afghan war because it is right and necessary to put an end to the taliban's regime. to ignore the threat is wrong both for our own safety and welfare and the welfare of the people who need our help. just like with the nazis, afghani people are being subjected to ridiculous punishment, ridiculte and abuse. they are not free and they suffer. if we don't interfere, who will? this has been going on for nearly 30 years. it's time we put a stop to this. if we don't, we are acting immorally against human rights and our responsibility as a world leader in social, economic and military affairs. to ignore the problems would make us cowards. on the other hand, to fight for what is right would make us heroes. no one is saying that we have to instill american culture in afghanistan. rather what's important is upholding human rights in general, rights that afghans haven't known for a very long time.

if we do not act now, eventually the terrorist group in the middle east will grow so strong and powerful that it takes on excessive control. one, it could grow so large and strong and expand so far that eventually it has enough power to significantly harm the united states and others (9/11 is just the beginning). two, since these terrorist organizations are based in the middle east, there could be an issue with oil which a necessity in most countries. think about japan which has absolutely no natural oil of its own. since japan is a premeire world super power, the downfall of the nation would be a downfall of other nations unified against the pitfalls of terrorism.

for these reasons and more, i am PRO the war in afghanistan. we must wage war against those who threaten security on all levels. other options have been exhausted and failed. this is a situation for which it is necessary. the cost cannot be a factor, for if the taliban gets our of hand, the cost to maintain organization and just rule will be far greater...

We should not wage war on Afghanistan becuase it was the terroists fualt not the people in Afghanistan's fualt. Why should innocent people be punished for other peoples crimes, WHY!! Why can't we just leave them alone and they might just leave us alone, maybe. So thats why i am on the Con side of this.

yes, the terrorists are to blame - we agree on that much. but it is the terrorists who currently control afghanistan; control the government and control the people. innocent people aren't being punished. by going to war with afghanistan we are going to war against terrorist occupation and control. for instance, when the u.s. waged war against the nazis during wwII, we didn't have anything against GERMANY but rather against nazi control. it's the same thing here. sure some innocent afghanis may die and that's a risk we are going to have to assume. however several sacrificed lives for the good of an entire nation can only yield good results. this same concept was also used during the end of wwII when we droped the atomic bomb on hiroshima. we sacrificed the lives of many but ultimately we saved millions of more lives in the process. the same applies to afghanistan.

also your proposition of just leaving them alone and them leaving us alone is so incredibly wrong. THEY attacked US, and they continue to pose terrorist threats all over the world. it is clear that they are not going to stop. their own leader, bin ladin, is always making video tapes and recordings, etc, talking about how they are NOT going to stop until they achieve their goals (power and control). turning a blind eye to the horror can once again be likened to hitler pre-wwII. although hitler ignored the terms and conditions of the treaty of versailles (which ended wwI) and continued to gain power with cruelty, everyone wanted to avoid war so we let him be. until of course he gained so much strength and power that he waged war in europe and eventually with the u.s. is that what we are waiting for? history often repeats itself. it is important to learn from the past.

The Mujahideen beat back the Soviets in Afghanistan. Afterwards, they fought amongst each other until the Taliban (mostly foreigners) moved in and seized control. Thus, it is incorrect to claim the Taliban defeated the Soviets. It's accurate to say some Mujahideen warlords sided with the Taliban, but the two are separate entities and one should not confuse one with the other.

The war in Afghanistan is futile, a waste of precious resources and lives. It does nothing to promote our national security interests; instead what it has done is create a growing rift with Pakistan and the rise of anti-Americanism in the region.
