Pro

People should not be able to mooch off of those of us who work for a living.
harrytruman

Con

Very few people mooch off of welfare because they want to, most of the time its because they need to feed their kids.
Debate Round No. 1
Goldbug1881

Pro

Why don't they get a job then?
harrytruman

Con

Most times they do, it's just that they get payed 7.25$ a hour so they need more money.
Debate Round No. 2
Goldbug1881

Pro

Why don't they just increase the minimum wage then rather than taking money from us?
harrytruman

Con

Because congress is a building full of idiots and they never would have thought of that.
Debate Round No. 3
Goldbug1881

Pro

But you agree that raising the minimum wage is a much better option than welfare right?
harrytruman

Con

Sure, but this debate was about why we should not abolish welfare, I think it should be replaced, not abolished.
Debate Round No. 4
Goldbug1881

Pro

Thus, abolishing welfare and establishing something else, so you agree.
harrytruman

Con

Yes, but I am arguing that we shouldn't abolish welfare as it is.

A - This is not a debate by any definition.
B - Most of welfare goes to pensioners.
C - Some also goes to subsidising low wages
D - A tiny minority is spent on the umenployed
E - 0.7% of welfare is spent on fraud.

I agree with the first commenter, you're just having a casual chat.

There are some group in society that will always need help to survive, mainly old and sick people. Its up to us to choose what we do about it. We could help or we could let them perish. Neither of those is inherently bad or good, but i prefer the former.

I feel like this is more of a casual conversation than a debate.

Reasons for voting decision: Sorry con. You said you agree with the resolution. Even though you wanted something else done also, the fact remains that you still think welfare should go.

Reasons for voting decision: Both sides had good conduct. Con made a grammar error in Round 2 ("payed"), so spelling and grammar goes to Pro. The debate came down to a semantic disagreement about what abolishing welfare means, and I cannot resolve this dispute because the resolution was never adequately defined, so both sides are tied on convincing arguments. No sources were used by either side. All in all not exactly a debate for the history books but interesting to watch.
