I've gotten more interested in playing the trumpet lately, and I'll probably end up buying one soon. I was wondering whether I should get a C or Bb trumpet. So, which one should I get?
"And so I tell you, keep on asking, and you will receive what you ask for. Keep on seeking, and you will find. Keep on knocking, and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks, receives. Everyone who seeks, finds. And to everyone who knocks, the door will be opened." Jesus in Luke 11:9-10

Bb is standard. It's used 95% of the time.

In fact, the only time I even consider breaking out the C trumpet is for church performances, and that's only because religious music is notorious for being totally </3 to brass players.

Get a Bb.

Would I be right in thinking a C trumpet would mean parts wouldn't need to be transposed when writing for brass sections?

That's right... but don't write for C trumpet.

Any trumpeter worth his salt can transpose for himself.

That, and asking someone to play C trumpet is... I mean, unless you're playing some classical piece... it's weird.

What PoeJoe said. No need for a C.

You play trumpet?

Played, i used to play brass in general, in the day it was my whole life. I still listen to lots of brass quintet music EBQ, and the Canadian Brass - good stuff.

Haha, I actually do play trombone! I wanted to branch out more into trumpet. I play a little bit of trumpet, but I wanna play better.

And by the way, thanks for all the comments, guys. I guess I'll go with a Bb!

For your age I would definitely get a Bb since you won't (I imagine) be playing alot of orchestral pieces yet which is where the C would definitely come in handy. I would only suggest getting a C if you reaaaaally want to pursue trumpet later in life. I got one half a year before college so I could have time to break it in and get used to playing on it. Now I play on it fairly regularly so it ended up being a good investment.
