Recently I've started really liking movie soundtracks. It's the kind of music I wish more people would compose.

Here's the ones I can think of now.

Inception

Chariots of fire

Lord of the rings

Nice, brilliant topic idea! I have to say Shutter Island, even though none of the music was part of an original score, it was still a magnificent soundtrack.

Breaking Bad FTW. Though it's not a movie.

Also Office Space isn't bad.

Twilight.

Yeah, that's right. I said it. They have some good music on there.

I made the sickest instrumental from a song off an album by an artist featured on the original Twilight Soundtrack.

I think that's as close as I'll get. :P

O Brother Where Art Thou's soundtrack is pure awesomeness.

Clint Mansell is awesome. Two of my favorite soundtracks are his. From Requiem for a Dream and Moon.

I also like the Virgin Suicides soundtrack by Air. And the Amelie soundtrack by Yann Tiersen.

At the time, the soundtrack from the movie, Singles was alright, but I've been gaining an appreciation for the music of Kenny Loggins and Frank Stallone, lately. Nashville had a pretty great soundtrack as well. So did Saturday Night Fever.

I forgot Beat Street. That movie's soundtrack was so good, they put out a second album of songs that were only in the movie briefly, and in the background, to satisfy demand. New Jack City was pretty good as well. Also, the theme to Deep Cover, just all by itself, given that it was Snoop's first time on wax, is worth noting. And, 8 Mile...

The Shawshank Redemption and American Beauty soundtracks, both by Thomas Newman, are good. Road to Perdition, also by Newman, is pretty good.

Danny Elfman (formerly of Oingo Boingo) has some collections called "Music for a Darkened Theater" that are worth a listen. Perhaps my favorite score of his is for Edward Scissorhands.

Hans Zimmer has been popular this past decade, but for good reason; I began listening to his scores around 1994, when he composed The Lion King. He's pro-percussion, and I like that it often drives his compositions.

James Horner's Glory remains one of the best soundtracks I've ever heard.

Lately, I've enjoyed listening to the Game of Thrones soundtracks while reading the novels.

I've been a fan of soundtracks for about two decades, and it's fun to catch a song you know from a movie trailer or sporting event pre-game show.
