So I'm writing a novel, and I'm mulling over whether or not two characters should get frisky with each other. The whole novel is written from one character's perspective and unfolds over seventy hours, so if they did I'd pretty much have to write about the experience, I couldn't really just glaze over it.

On the plus side, there's the fact that it's genuinely what I think these two characters would do.

On the other hand, I'm not writing a porno, and there are prizes for really bad sex scenes (which I don't want to win) and I'm not confident of my ability to write about it in a tasteful/realistic manner.

Thoughts?

What age group is it for?

Assuming it is for adults/young adults and you think it could legitimately belong in the book and make it better, I would say you should try writing and rewriting one until you have the final result then make the judgement from there. Try to get other people's perspective on it also.

Depending on how comfortable you are with explicit details, you should do it based on that. Usually, most books have a sex scene somewhere, bu that doesnt mean it has to have all the gory deets. You can do what a lot of people do when they're not comfortable with being explicit and protest that tey do have sex but skip over the actual sex part and end it with something along the lines of after-sex talking or stuff like that....

If you've read Allegiant (3rd book of Divergent) then you'll know what i mean.

including a sex scene doesn't make your novel a porno. if the story demands and u don't include sex scene, then u r committing a mistake

Whilst I too consider grammar to be of the utmost importance and I have been known to cry at the sight of a grammatical error, I thought that would have been a bit harsh :P

You could just add a section that implies they did, you don't actually have to run through the scene. I'm pretty sure that's what separates it from being perverse.

Plus, it satisfies the idea that you feel they would without taking the risk of winning any awards.

And nothing needs a sex scene. You say it spans 70 hours. People can spend 70 hours together without having sex.

If you are uncomfortable with it you can get a ghost writer to write that part.

Sex scenes have to be very, very carefully written for them to not come across as crass or just plain boring and uncomfortable. Less GRRM and more SK imo.

If you're not too comfortable about writing the actual scene, you can always indicate that the scene has happened - so your readers grasp whatever character development you're trying to pitch. You know - leave a shirt on the ground in the setting. Mention the character leave the bedroom. Drop hints about the act having happened.
