Allow me to begin this update with a word of thanks. I would first like to thank all of you who have been participating in the tournament thus far. Hopefully you all have made some new friends (and hopefully not too many new enemies). Because of your efforts, time and dedication, things have been running smoothly. All of you have continued to inspire me with your passion for argumentation and reason. This makes me hopeful.

I would certainly not be the same person that I am today were it not for my presence in an environment where there is always someone ready to inform me of how wrong I truly am. And, of course, sometimes I am truly wrong. This is to be expected and welcomed - for there can be nothing more subversive to one's intellectual development than to remain in ignorance. Some of you may end up being proven wrong in the course of your time here. It is my sincere desire that none of you will become upset if this happens. It is the height of intellectual honesty to admit that you're wrong about something.

Consider, for example, a brief anecdote by the evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins in which he describes how his undergraduate professor ended up being proven wrong.

"I do remember one formative influence in my undergraduate life. There was an elderly professor in my department who had been passionately keen on a particular theory for, oh, a number of years, and one day an American visiting researcher came and he completely and utterly disproved our old man's hypothesis. The old man strode to the front, shook his hand and said, "My dear fellow, I wish to thank you, I have been wrong these fifteen years". And we all clapped our hands raw. That was the scientific ideal, of somebody who had a lot invested, a lifetime almost invested in a theory, and he was rejoicing that he had been shown wrong and that scientific truth had been advanced." - Richard Dawkins

Having said that, there are still a few matters of business that still need to be taken care of.

1. Some of you that are participating in the tournament are not able to vote for technical reasons. Perhaps some of you live in countries that prevent you from being able to vote. I do not want anyone to feel handicapped while they are still participating, so I have come up with a way to work around this.

Anyone who is unable to vote in the tournament due to technical reasons, please sign the list below:

1. UnitedAndy
2.
3.
4.

I am looking for at least 4 (perhaps more) people who are not participating in the tournament that could function as proxy voters. You would be assigned to one of the following people on the list and vote on their behalf. It would be very nice if some people would step in to do this.

2. Secondly, most of the initial matches have gotten underway, but there are still a few people who have not gotten started. There is, of course, nothing wrong with this. I fully understand that many of you have jobs and may also be going to school. However, for the sake of time, I still have to try to move things along. As of right now, there are three groups that still have not started. Once again, a status update would be nice. I am in no way mad or upset with you. :) If for some reason, you are no longer participating, feel free to contact me via PM, in this thread or on my page.

Brian v. mongoose
tvellalott v. Reasoning
J.Kenyon v. Ann

I know what J.Kenyon and Ann are doing; however, I don't know anything about the first two groups. I'll give the first two groups three more days to come up with a topic; after that, I'll be assigning topics. Reasoning, I remember you saying something about how much you loved Noam Chomsky. ;) And I'm fairly sure that Mongoose is a firm supporter of abortion rights. ;)

Its technically not retribution. Its using the same standards you used on me. You figure out who has more spelling and grammar errors and they win the point.

So far I have RFD'd

1) Danielle vs. BlackVoid http://www.debate.org...
2) Sieben vs. CirRk http://www.debate.org...
3) TUF vs. badger http://www.debate.org...
4) RoyLatham vs. mongeese http://www.debate.org...

Is any other debate finished?

Thank you very much for leaving such thorough RFD's, Danielle. :) Hopefully everyone will follow your lead, especially since some of these will be ending in not too long. You practically wrote a term paper for all of them. :P

As it currently stands, the votes look like this.

1) Danielle vs. BlackVoid [5 to 1]
2) Sieben vs. CirRk [2 to 4]
3) TUF vs. badger [4 to 1]
4) RoyLatham vs. mongeese [2 to 2]

This is just counting tournament votes. The 7 point system is just designed to make all votes equal (i.e., all equal to one). I double checked all of those, and I'm fairly sure they're accurate. All of them could use a lot more votes. It's kind of nice to get a wide consensus so that everyone can be satisfied.

How are the matchups for the 2nd round determined? Is it based on the brackets as they are now:
=======
Round 1
=======

Brian v. mongoose
PcP v. Vi
Badger v. TUF ???
tvellalott v. Reasoning ???
feverish v. Hello-Orange ???
Freeman v. m93samman
Skeptic v. LF

Danielle v. Blackvoid --- http://www.debate.org...
CiRrK v. Sieben --- http://www.debate.org...
mongeese v. Roylatham ---http://www.debate.org...
wjmelements v. Grape
C_N v. UnitedAndy --- http://www.debate.org...
J.Kenyon v. Ann

(so, winner of brian v mongoose vs. the winner of PCP v Vi, etc)

Or is it randomized after each round?

Danielle is the one helping me set things up with that. I'll ask her. I think we can end up making it work either way, however.

Sure, if you want. Because it's kind of late in the game, I'll tell you what I told Grape. You can take an auto win because of Reasoning's absence and advance to the next round, or we can face off.

I think Grape might be taking his auto win, so I wouldn't have any problem with us facing off.

Yeah, that seems right. Whoever is ahead at the end will be the winner.

In the case of a tournament tie (i.e., an equal number of people from the tournament vote for each person), the other voters votes should be taken into account. That seems fair to me.

There is, however, only one debate that is tied right now in the tournament.

It's about whether Rawls' social contract justifies government. It's a really good debate, you should all read it and vote on it.

I sort of don't mind the relaxed schedule. But I agree, this is going on a bit too long. I think I'll set up a slightly more rigid deadline for round 2. Most groups are already done with this round.
