Is DDO becoming religion crazy (even more so than it was)?

Looking over the "recently ended debates," 6 of the last 10 have been religious. The religion forum has more activity than any other forum (misc has more posts, but that is because it originally had "games" in there, now that it is split, it loses that much activity).

Looking through the news, we see that no one likes to talk about things that are actually happening in the world.

Are we just using DDO as an escape from reality? Where our ideal place is nothing more than a place to argue, debate, and bicker?

Well, people talk about current events/politics in real life. How often do you get to argue about God and religion outside of the internet? Most people don't really like discussing that stuff.
Should we subsidize education?

Wait, so Christianity is false and a fantasy? Talking about your current spiritual journey and your spiritual future is something not happening in the world and is an escape from reality?

Really. Cause even from an Atheist perspective religion is important and influential in the world.

But you're a CHRISTIAN and you believe that your Savior of humanity, the eternity of your soul, and the ruler of the Universe are irrelevant in this world?

Somethings wrong in your head.

Where our ideal place is nothing more than a place to argue, debate, and bicker?

An individual's faith is something internal to them, not external to the world. Now if we were to be talking about what some church did in some town, sure, that would be real world news.

Yeah? People are fighting to take away rights under the disillusionment that somehow it protects rights? Oh yeah? The supreme court just passed a law saying that overturns "x" amendment? You don't say? People are terrible?

I avoid direct religious debates.

I don't see any influx of religious members so much, but maybe there is an increase on the generic atheists who like to poke at the theists.

There is a very nice diversity in Religion among the community, not so in other areas.

False. Haven't you read your Bible? Jesus says to preach the Gospel to the four corners of the Earth. You are not to hide your faith, you are to proclaim your faith. DATC is a good example of someone exemplifying the Bibles words.

Even as a Buddhist, it says about the Dharma to "preach it, establish it, and make it known" and to "vanquish and refute" vain doctrines. In other words, it's a call to debate those who have differing views and it's your duty to defend your faith against it.

Religion debates are fine. Sure they get old and repetitive, but I bet all of us have had our fair share of religious debates, so why not let the newbies get theirs in. They will get tired of them, mark my words, and move onto different topics. Religious debates are a good trainer for other debates because it forces you to look at a topic from the other point of view. I seriously don't think that the problem is big enough to be complained about.

I've never been big on religion debates. Too theoritical and unimportant for me.

Sums it up for me.

Why talk about something that isn't going to change your view on something?

I mean, come on, who actually converts due to a debate? If I was a hardcore Catholic, and someone "metaphysically" proved God didn't exist through a series of twists on the laws of logic and some axioms, who gives a damn? I'd probably still remain a hardcore Catholic.

Okay, even assuming the so-called proof undeniably and logically proved that God couldn't possibly exist. All right, what have you accomplished? You make yourself feel better and reassert your own beliefs, but you have absolutely no impact on anyone else, except to reaffirm the values of people in your category.

In summary, religion matters not. I am more inclined to talking about things that have more palpable and realistic effects on my life.

So you are completely unaware that religion plays a key factor in much of the news and the truth about its subject matter is a important issue to debate, if it was debated more openly in every aspect of life we would have advanced further and had less violence and hate from it years ago.

And that is part of the reason.

@ OP

I was wondering why a large proportion of my debates happen to be about religion. I realized that many of the topics about which I feel strongly are India centric - and have no relevance on this website...

Some of the 'secular' topics I would love to debate would be Kanimozhi (Pro), Dhoni vs Ganguly (Ganguly), Congress vs BJP (Congress), Baba Ramdev (Pro), Manmohan Singh (Pro), Sonia Gandhi (Pro), Capitalism vs Communism / Socialism in Indian context (depends on topic), cricket cs hockey (cricket) and many others. Even if I manage to find an opponent - the voters won't have any idea about the topic. Religion is more universal.

Overall I'm not huge on debating religion, especially not with anti-theists. I have done a few religious debates in the past though due to feeling a need to defend Islam.

This quite nicely sums up a key point - the only major political topics that are talked about and understood are American and occasionally British. Members from other countries basically can't do certain debates because no regular here will be bothered to look up other countries politics in depth.

An example of this is that I'd like to have a few debates about my state's elective system, yet know that because of differences between the American and Australian systems, it won't happen. Still though, I'd like to think I have interesting topics for my debates.

Also, somebody wisely said earlier that there's not many places 1 can discuss religion freely. That's another key point.
