I posted a challenge to lasagna for a debate, based on our ensuing discussion I changed the title of the debate. I then discovered that the world ends when you do that. The site no longer can find the stored debate, producing a "page not found" error. I cannot cancel the debate. I cannot start over with a new challenge, because the site doesn't allow a new challenge while one is pending! It may be pending forever.

I sent a message to tech support, but the warning is:

Don't ever edit a debate by changing the title.

Roy, perhaps it is because once you change the title, the link changes too?

http://www.debate.org... includes the resolution "Toilet Paper Orientation." If the title is changed, then you probably can't use that link anymore. Have you tried updating the link to the new resolution? I.e., if the resolution was changed to "Orientation Toilet Paper," then would the new link not be http://ww.debate.org...?

Also, you can use numbers for debates, so you can have two links for one debate. E.g., my debate "Chewing gum should be allowed in school" comes with two links:

http://www.debate.org...
http://www.debate.org...

So if I change title, I can still use the debate number in the link and it will direct me to the updated debate. Thoughts?

I think the bug might be related to how Juggle is trying to move away from the debate number index. Every debate number is programmed to redirect to a certain debate title. Changing that title leaves you with a 404 when you try to locate the debate.

For example, http://www.debate.org... redirects to http://www.debate.org.... If the title of the debate were to be changed, the debate would still redirect to http://www.debate.org..., but that debate would no longer exist. You should be able to locate your debate by typing the new title in hyphenated formatting in the address following http://www.debate.org.... You could then cancel the challenge and make a new one.

I think wje has it. The link I see has the debate number in it, but it must be redirected to something with the title. One way to solve it is to always use the original title for the link. Textpattern does that for blog posts, for example.

They could also return to the debate index for redirection purposes but keep the debate urls with the debate title in them the ones that show up in search engines.

I like searching for evidence for my debates on the Internet and finding DDO as the second or third link.

So that's why it's still the same :P

Perhaps it would be best to just let our debate expire and copypasta the argument into a new one? At least for a quick fix...

Yeah, if Juggle doesn't fix it, we'll have to wait for expiration. Of course, since it now resides in the tenth dimension, it may never expire. No telling what life is like there.

Juggle did not reply to my requests to get the problem fixed. We'll have to wait to see if it expires.

Y'all remember, never edit the title of a debate. Cancel and start over.
