I would second that. I would guess there are security reasons to disallow html.

One thing that has occured to me is that a Wiki-like mark-up (WikiML) could be used as well. So, instead of the h1, h2, h3 tags you would use "=" signs.

So headers wold look like

==Header One==
===Header Two===
====Header Three===

Instead of anchor tags you would use the brackets to create links:

To search, click [http://google.com...|here].

And citations could work in debates the way they do on Wikipedia, which has a much more elegant solution for citions.

(Click Edit on any Wikipedia page and you can see real-life examples of this markup)

The benefits that WikiML has to HTML are

1 Easier to type
2 Less of a security risk
3 Better support for citations
4 Anyone who has edited a wiki knows basic WikiML

The benefits of either HTML or WikiML would be:

1 Style uniformity (i.e. Things like headers, lists and citations would look the same no matter what debate you are looking at. This would enhance readability. Currently, the person writing the debate has to style each line themselves. Not everyone is good at this and everyone has their on way of doing it which causes your eyes have to adjust when going from Pro's argument to Con's, for example)

2 Style changability (The styles could be change system wide and all debates would reflect the change).
