Not to rain on your parade or anything, but I believe it features the top debaters (according to win ratios) that are currently on debate.org at that moment. Unfortunately, it does not mean you are actually a top debater on the site, just at a current moment.

Yes. Unfortunately, nearly everyone is in the top 50% and anyone with more than one win is more like in the top 70%.

I could be wrong but I'm pretty sure it's not random, rather it is people in the [whatever] + percentile in the order they've logged in.
Try checking it when you've only just logged in, as I assume the OP did. You will almost always be on or near the top.
Try staying logged in and checking again, say an hour later. You will almost certainly have moved down.
Try logging out and back in. Back to the top!

I think it's a simple but ingenious way of making people who have won a few debates feel good about themselves and therefore be more likely to keep using the site.

Actually, it chooses the top 5 debaters that are online at the present moment. You just got a good time frame, have mad debating skillz or both.

But I agree, how the hell did s0m31john make that list?

Actually, I'm going to have to agree that it is the most recent person who logged on at or above the 80th percentile.

There is, however, always five people there unless there are 4 or less people on DDO.

It is random.

It may have to do with having recent debates that one is winning as well.

It is 80%+, which is, of course, incredibly easy to obtain, especially considering how there are many dummy accounts (by which I mean accounts that do very little before going inactive).

There are a lot of those.

DDO needs to change that function so that it is only of the 95th percentile.

And, yes, PoeJoe, I know that they won't change anything for a long time.
