Who on this site is part of an actual (y'know, real life) debate team? If so, what event?

I'm a PF guy myself.

I can do LD, I just can't write the arguments. PF I can make one that looks like it was carved out of marble by an angel.

Well, I am a student council rep and represent my Freshmen class at the state level, but not part of a "formal" debating team.

Don't get me wrong, there are some very fine debates on here it's just a lot different.

For example, no research in round. You have to think quickly in order to refute your opponents arguments if they're unexpected which is a lot more difficult (obviously)

Not even that. Your opponents (in public forum) give their constructive 4 minute speech, and three minutes later after crossfire you stand up and give a 4 minute speech attacking it. You do have a bit of time you can use to plan your speeches, but its a pretty tiny amount (2 minutes total)

Does mock trial count? My school doesn't have a debate team. I would probably look good on a college application if I started one :p

I would count mock trial. I'm just asking about a debate activity other than this site.

16K: This site pales in comparison to the prowess needed for actual debating.

Yeah, but for PF you practically can have one person flowing the other people's arguments and the other person just sitting there pondering on what to say and what arguments to use. It's almost cheating. LD is much harder. Not as many speeches, more complex cases, no partner to help you, and only two minutes more of prep time to spread over two times to use it.

Lol trust me, partners are usually a hindrance more than a help. Especially those damned closed crossfires. Let me tell you, there is nothing worse than watching your partner get their @ss kicked not being able to answer questions, when you know you could answer them easily.

Another thing about PF the speaker positions are heavily skewed. First speaker doesnt really do anything.

Fair enough, but while your friend is getting their as.s kicked in CX, you can be coming up with arguments to make your opponent look like a retard.

Another thing about PF the speaker positions are heavily skewed. First speaker doesnt really do anything.

This is entirely not true. The first speaker has one of the most important jobs in PF: reading the case. I'll explain.

First off, let's just get something clear. PF is more of a persuasive speaking event than a debating event. The judges aren't really paying too much attention to what your saying, but rather how persuasive you were. So being the one to stand up and persuade your judge with your case is a massively important role that can set the tone for the entire debate.
