I came to DDO with the hope of finding a place with people who, on a Venn diagram, fall within the intersection of the sets "Is an intelligent and informed debater," and "Is not, on the balance, an as$hole."

After my unpleasant experiences with Contradiction and his friends over the last few days, experiences that quite literally provoked suicidal ideation on my part (I've discussed my mental health issues openly on other forums, but it had not come up here on DDO) on two separate occasions, I closed my account.

I've had time to calm down since then, to get myself in balance, and to decide that Contradiction's gang was probably the exception to the rule. And so I was going to come back.

But then I saw a) that royalpaladin had left, b) that she cited my having been driven away as a factor, c) that I was not the only one who had been driven away in this manner, and d) how she was treated by most people who responded to her final post (a treatment I fully expect in this same thread).

So much for coming back.

My preliminary conclusion is that the only way I'm going to find the place I'm looking for is to make it myself. I'm looking at a place like debategraph, where discussion takes the form of argument maps, where there is no voting, no popularity contests, and where every idea is liable to critical analysis.

If you fall within the intersection of the sets listed above, aren't afraid of non-standard discussion formats like debategraph, and would like to join this community once I have it set up (and I don't know when that will be), send an email to djwpublic1 at gmail dot com. Do not use this address for any other purpose. (The gonads of several people who have misused my personal information hang on my wall. My fiancée wants me to take them down, but I want her to take down that FCKH8 2011 calendar of nearly naked men. Such is love.)

I won't say I'm never coming back, because never is an awfully long time. But if/when I do come back, it won't be for long unless the atmosphere here has become unrecognizable from its current form.

Yeah, This isnt getting funny nor helping DDO. Its just making this site more and more like tumblr. A site filled with creeps posting porn. Now we seriously need to stop driving potential and good debaters away and start being nice. And for those of you that are causing this, I hope you are happy now because this and im sure a lot more in DDO is your fault.

Debategraph? Sounds boring.

I like heated debate, conviction, wide range of views, rhetoric, passion; not dull crap like presenting a bare argument graph and cross checking it like some math problem. Booorriiinnngg.

In any case, people who flame should be reported. I don't think there are any moderators on this site.

It is hard to believe. An adult wanting to kill themself because of something a no-name unimportant person with no beating on their life said? C'mon.

If you think you're feeling "suicidal" because of DDO, I can guarantee there's a lot more going on with you. I would strongly advise you to seek a mental health physician. It's not DDO, it's a chemical imbalance in your brain. DDO is simply exacerbating a preexisting condition.

Geo, I like you and we agree on many things, but I wish you would have a little more compassion for other people's emotional issues. Not everyone is like you. We all struggle with different things.

You're irresponsible to furnish any type of diagnosis. The correct action is to be on the phone with 911 to call in a health and welfare check on this man. I seriously hope one of his "friends" here knows his full name and location. Always error on the side of life.

I have compassion for people with how I treat them and I have compassion for people who actually have real problems, but what I dont have is an understanding as to why a person would come to a debate site and then be mentally broken by things a twerp said over the internet.

Interesting. It's irresponsible for me to err on the side of caution by advising him to seek help from a mental health professional. I could have sworn that's the same thing you're advising.

Just making a logical inference. Most people don't kill themselves because of DDO, therefore it's more reasonable to assume that he already has a preexisting condition (i.e. predisposed to clinical depression), and he should therefore seek help with it.

If ideas of suicide can be induced by reading the words of individuals with whom you have no actual social capital (i.e. not your boss, friends, family, lover, community, neighbor), then you SHOULD discontinue use of this site (and sites like it) until you can discover and regulate what could allow such a mental transformation to happen.
