Incorrect citing, what do you do?

Someone in a debate (not naming names) cited a book and page reference as evidence for a numerical claim. However, the actual book when at said page does not say what is being referred to (that is, the "evidence" is non-existent, only a link to another source). In fact, the entire chapter is on a completely different issue. What would one do as a voter or a debater in this situation?

If you're a debater, point out the specific source and say that it is being misused. That way, voters will pay specific attention to the source and will probably figure out that it's wrong.

If you're a voter, then you should vote against them and mention why.

Of course, this is after you've finished executing them for their heinous crimes against humanity.

You should dig into this because it's likely it was cut and pasted from a different source like wikipedia or something and not the writer deliberately writing.

I always do a quick copy/paste search on a writer when they are new or it looks c/p...
