For me, it was when I googled "evolution debates," clicked a link, and saw Kleptin slaughtering GodSands in an absurdly formal yet intellectual way. Home sweet home.

Researching socialism and came across J.Kenyon and Danielle's debate on capitalism vs. communism.

I was googling religious picture for some other forum, when a pic of Inquiring Truth popped up in the google search (because he was debating someone else on a religious debate). I went to HS with him and so I started to check out DDO and joined then.

Hmm. I'm actually don't remember. I remember when I first went onto the site, though. I created an account called 'ArmedTortoise' and set up a debate about whether humanity should explore space. (http://www.debate.org...)Unfortunately I mentioned the site to some of my friends and one of them (Michael) decided to troll the entire site, including my debates, for a while. It was hilarious.

Then I became Kinesis.

I've debated you before. Under a different account, which has been abandoned. Guess.

For me it is a long and sordid history.

I can't remember how, but at some point during the early 2000's I became a member of the site Fark.com. It's a "news" site where the stories are submitted by the user base, similar to reddit or digg.

Occasionally (at least while I was a member there), sites would spark religious debates, especially with regards to evolution. However, these discussions were generally considered to be flame wars and discouraged as they were contrary to the purpose of the site. Yes, a site name Fark whose mascot was a squirrel with digitally enhanced testicles, has standards.

I was bit by the Internet arguing bug, and eventually looked for a place that wasn't just tolerating of such discussions, but was purposed for them. Around the mid 2000's I began searching GoogleGroups and became a member of Atheism vs. Christianity. I was there for a good long while and still post there, from time to time. However, that group suffers from a rather small and static userbase, so the arguments get tired very quickly without any real variety or influex of new blood.

I desired some place where I could speak on such issues and not be bumping heads into the same people over and over again (at least when those people were more along the lines of robots, rather than thinking individuals or crazies) as well as a place that was suitable for a more formalized debate. I tried my hand at some independent blogs, but eventually got here while searching for debate sites.

And here we are.

I joined the school's debate team and somebody referred me to the site for practice. I did one debate on mormonism, had to forfeit and just forgot about the site, then came back 8 months later and loved it.

I wanted to learn more about the Nuclear Non Proliferation Treaty. I googled "nuclear NPT" and one of the pages was Mirza's debate against a noob. After reading, I saw that it had a comments feature and a voting feature and found it very interesting. I had never "officially" debated in high school. I got an account and started my own debate. I accepted a few open challenges. Once I got hooked, there was no turning back. I also later found the forums and starting posting here as well.

Just when I got bored of debating, I discovered what the games forum was all about (playing mafia). It held my interest long enough until my interest in debating re-ignited. I'll probably keep debating, posting, voting, playing mafia in cycles. When one seems boring, the other seems interesting.

No. More philosophical.

Heh, I was looking stuff up for Halo, believe it or not, and I saw this debate: http://www.debate.org...

You can actually see my old file, The_Insider, being all fanboyish in the comments.....

I found a debate on the Negative income tax and another debate on free market vs mixed market capitalism. So I joined and did a few debates, left for probably 2 months, then returned at the same time as the conservative coalition arrived (around November).

I think I got to those by googling "debate".
