This is for the younger members of DDO who haven't settled on a career path. I'm curious if most of us DDOers have a similiar mentality. I'm a very ambitious person and I see this site as one of the tools to helping me hone some of my applicational skills. Are you guys similiar? Is being smart, and exploring that, a symptom of ambition?

For instance:

I aspire to go to Harvard Law School and I aspire to graduate in some 'cum laude' form. I spend my summer debating, researching and reading others' debates. I watch Harvard Classes online, I read books by Plato (The Republic) and I write research papers on Hume's Guillotine, The Problem of Evil and The Problem of Induction for the purpose of preparing for my education so that I can graduate in a high percentage of my class. Is this how some of you others feel on this site? Are you ambitious people? What are some of your ambitions? Do you think there's something wrong with being ambitious?

I'm too old for your question. I've already been ambitious, so it's not in doubt.

I think most, not all, DDOers are ambitious. The right-wingers want to get rich; the left-wingers want to rule society.

Lol. I am looking for neither, but both would be good perks.

I was being sarcastic. No, I don't want to "rule society." Ha.

Can't say that I'm all that ambitious.

I'm very ambitious... or I was... until my career took a major detour into craptown thanks to an incredibly unfortunate medical condition which affected my brain. Recently I've fully recovered and am just trying to get back on the saddle. Coming on DDO was a good way to warm my brain up for interviews and work. It's amazing what a rush I get from debating, my brain feels like it's going at 200mph again. :-)

Nope. I actually want to help people more than myselves. According to a study by Psychology Today, liberals have evolved more than conservatives because their mentality is to help others (welfare).

I wouldn't use welfare as an example, but giving people a fair shot at the American Dream. Welfare rarely if ever solves any problems.

The Fool: I am but a Fool....
"The bud disappears when the blossom breaks through, and we might say that the former is refuted by the latter; in the same way when the fruit comes, the blossom may be explained to be a false form of the plant's existence, for the fruit appears as its true nature in place of the blossom. These stages are not merely differentiated; they supplant one another as being incompatible with one another." G. W. F. HEGEL

Altruism is evolutionary not beneficial because it inhibits the chances of your genes being passed onto offsprings, which is why genes (and therefore humans) are naturally selfish. Altruism is more or less a learned behaviour, so any attempts to ground it in "evolved more" is ludicrous.
