The idea is a very simple one. We set up a DDO League. The current leaderboard system is such that if you're a noob sniper you get a massive lead above anyone else who may do less but better debates. So, setting up a league will allow a large number of things, including:

1) An easy way of setting up a lot of debates against good members
2) A way of recording the debates against good members
3) The best way of seeing how good you are at debating compared to the best of the best.

This will also create a database of great debates between great debaters. It would be, say, a 95th percentile+ system, so newbies can't participate and give away free wins, but it will mean that everyone knows who is in the league so good wins go on record.

The other major advantage is that it isn't a tournament. You don't have set opponents on set topics, but you can debate anything (as long as it has scholarly merit, so e.g. politics philosophy economics, not which superhero is better) with anyone on the list, and it goes down as a win/draw/loss. You can also have more than one match at once, and can start another whenever you like. The system will create a lot of good quality debates, and a good deal faster than with, say, a tournament.

Moreover, any debates you do with a member in the league after joining counts as a league match. That is, when you debate them, your win/loss can be added here. This means your debates have a larger reach than just another win on your dozens of others, but will give you more gloating rights here. More wins here will allow you to claim you're better than those who are hundreds of wins about you (e.g. Danielle or imabench) because here it's quality, not quantity.

If anyone wants to participate, add yourself to this list:

It only takes 7 wins to get to the 95th percentile.

Anyways, not sure if I'll join or not. Not sure how it works exactly and 8 peoples isn't that much. Do we get matched against opponents or just make our own challenges and such? What if someone ends up not participating?

You make your own challenges and the league is pretty much autonomous. That is, anyone can challenge anyone. With only good debaters, there won't be any troll accounts and I'm taking out the worse debaters automatically anyway.

Also, the "8 people" is just a random number. More would be better.

I might just make a message for people in the league regarding these debates. Or message other people who'd like to get involved. The idea is, though, we'd stop having some series of crummy debates emerging from nothingness...

Based on the quality of this debate:

Before forfeit, I see no reason to exclude you from the league (of course not as a top seed for obvious reasons): the idea is to have all the "big name" members in the league :)

I understand the premise of this, but have always been adamant about voter bias forever skewing any legitimate ranking system. In real debates, there are (supposed to be) impartial judges who vote according to a particular objective standard, and not their personal beliefs. That will never be the case on DDO. Sometimes I feel like my IQ goes down just from reading some of the RFDs people post. Remember - mandatory RFDs were supposed to combat vote bombing by forcing a reason behind a vote, but that's pretty stupid when most RFDs are limited to "Pro had better arguments" or more elaborate though unintelligible, massively biased justifications. If say I debate Roy on the death penalty, those who err on the side of conservativism will vote for him, while the more liberal-minded people will probably vote for me. We're both articulate and well versed on many sides of the issue; I doubt many people would be able to objectively discern better performance without their personal bias. As such, rankings of any kind don't mean much of anything to me. However, again I do understand this effort and you can feel free to add me to the list.

Does this happen anywhere?
